Brian Betesh: State Teacher of the Year

Join me in congratulating not only Danbury Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year, but now the State of Connecticut Teacher of the Year, Rogers Park Middle School’s own Mr. Brian Betesh!

I joined my fellow legislators, Mayor Alves, Congresswoman Hayes, Governor Lamont, and other local officials along with a packed auditorium of excited students to celebrate this incredible honor!

Mr. Betesh’s creativity, passion, and dedication to his students truly shine. His innovative approach to making learning fun and engaging uplifts not just his classroom, but the entire Danbury community.

We couldn’t be prouder!

A Busy Week in the City

What a busy and rewarding week in Danbury! In addition to the events I mention below, I also participated in the following:

•Joined Mayor Alves along with the Danbury Police Department’s Community Conditions Unit at Texas Roadhouse, where they raised funds for cancer treatment programs at Danbury Hospital.

• Met with leaders from Boehringer Ingelheim leadership to continue strengthening our partnership and support for local business and later with leadership at Linde, the world’s largest industrial gases and engineering company with revenues of $33 billion headquartered right here in Danbury.

• Attended the Catholic Charities Celebrity Breakfast with keynote speaker Dr. Ian Smith, who spoke about the incredible work Catholic Charities does in our community and the need for more compassion and care across our country.

• Stopped by the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Danbury graduation — a great program that immerses participants in every sector of our community. Congratulations to all the graduates.

•Visited Immaculate High School’s new Business Innovation Center, an exciting new space giving students opportunities for real-world, hands-on learning.

Business, community, and compassion are what make Danbury thrive — and I’m proud to be part of it all.

Sally's to Open in Danbury

Huge news for pizza lovers in Danbury! (And who doesn't love a good pizza?)

Sally's Apizza newest location is coming to the Danbury Fair Mall and is set to be the biggest pizza restaurant in the state.

The Danbury location will boast Sally’s largest menu selection and will be designed to be Vegas level spectacular!

Honoring Gladys Cooper

It was an honor to serve alongside Gladys Cooper on the Danbury Board of Education. She always did what was right for the children, and never wavered.

It was so special to see our community come together to honor her 30+ years of service with the naming of the new Gladys Cooper Board Room at Danbury High School West. Former colleagues from the Board of Education returned just for Mrs. Cooper.

As Mayor Roberto Alves said, it was a true bipartisan moment celebrating a lady whose dedication to Danbury’s children transcends politics. Thank you, Mrs. Cooper, for your unwavering devotion and leadership.

New Firehouse

I was honored to attend the dedication of the new Danbury Volunteer Fire Battalion Thirty-One firehouse right here in the 109th, a milestone years in the making and a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Our volunteer firefighters represent the best of Danbury: courage, service, and community. I’m proud that finally, under Mayor Alves’ leadership, we delivered on a long-promised Volunteer Firefighter Tax Abatement honoring their sacrifice after years of unnecessary delays.

Thank you to all our volunteers for all you do to keep Danbury safe.

Behind the Scenes at Kingswood Kitchens

I've always been curious about what’s behind the doors of Kingswood Kitchens, once home to one of Danbury’s historic hat factories. Grateful to Hank who invited us in and gave Mayor Alves and me a tour of this incredible space built in the 1870s, where so much of our city’s history and grit still lives on.

It was great running into my old supervisor from a part-time night cleaning job I had years ago. Jose has dedicated 35 years to perfecting the beautiful craftsmanship Kingswood is known for. We’re proud to work with this fantastic family business as they look for their next home, right here in our thriving city. Special thanks to Hank who is a second generation leader of this facility and his family for all they do for Danbury.

Special Session Announced

The House of Representatives will be in special session on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m.

I will provide more details as they become available.

211 Resource Guide

With the uncertainty surrounding the federal government's shutdown, including its impact on SNAP benefits and Access Health premiums, the United Way of Connecticut’s 211 has published a new resource to help provide up-to-date information.

This resource, which can be found here, outlines the current status of federal programs and provides direct links to state and community resources for those affected.

I encourage you all to not only use the resource, but to share it with those you believe can use it.

FYI: 211 is not directly impacted by the federal government shutdown and continues to operate 24/7/365.

Generation Power Assistance

The Generation Power CT (GPCT) Emergency Energy Assistance Program provides a one-time grant of up to $500 to help eligible Connecticut households with electric, gas, or fuel expenses.

Increasing energy costs are a challenge for many in the state, but through this program, GPCT has helped to provide families across Connecticut with secure access to heat, power, and water.

All GPCT energy programs are available to income-eligible households making up to 75% SMI gross household income. Each income-eligible household that receives a GPCT Energy Assistance Award will receive up to $500 toward a future fuel delivery or toward a past-due utility bill.

For the best chance of approval, and to make full use of this once-per-12-months grant, GPCT strongly encourages households to apply for assistance when they are most in need. GPCT has three energy assistance cycles coming up, including Nov 2-10.

The other dates:

  • January 2-10
  • March 2-10

As always, if you have any comments, questions or concerns, please reach out to my office.

Sincerely,

Farley Santos
