Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! The 2025 legislative session is underway. My colleagues and I have broken out into our respective committees and are making sure legislation is ready for the next part of the legislative process.

Please see below to see what I've been up to in Hartford and in the 117th district!

Last weekend, I joined a group of local leaders for a conversation about Milford’s long-term facilities planning for our schools. Thank you to the Milford Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Cutaia for organizing and leading such an important community conversation.

The Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness held a press conference to outline its legislative priorities. The organization is asking for an investment that would be crucial in the fight to prevent homelessness, as well as funding for services to those who are currently homeless.

It was an honor to stand in support with so many likeminded legislators and advocates, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for this important issue.

On Thursday, I attended the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast at Southern Connecticut State University.

I was glad to kick off the day surrounded by colleagues who also represent communities in Greater New Haven, as well as chamber members and other leaders.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Please take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a leader whose vision of justice, equality, and nonviolent resistance transformed our nation and inspired the world. Dr. King's unwavering commitment to civil rights reminds us of the power of courage, compassion, and collective action to create meaningful change.

Together we can continue to advance the dream Dr. King so eloquently shared - a world where freedom and dignity are the birthright of all people.

I want to make sure all of you stay safe and informed! A new scam is circulating where fraudsters are sending text messages claiming you have an unpaid toll and asking for payment. Please DO NOT click any links or provide any personal information.

Here are some tips from the FBI:
  •  If you receive one of these messages, file a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov. Include where the number of the originating text came from, and the website from which the number was generated.
  • Delete any scam texts received.
  • If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
  • Always verify any toll-related charges directly through official state websites or customer service.

Stay vigilant and share this message with your friends and family to help protect our community!

The work we do here in Connecticut has never felt more important. One thing that undoubtedly makes our work better is when we hear from you – so I hope you’ll take my survey and reach out to me directly if I can ever be of any help.

Sincerely,

MJ Shannon
State Representative
