Update on Duracell’s Relocation & Our Path Forward

February 24, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

I want to take a moment to address Duracell’s recent announcement about relocating its Global Research & Development Headquarters from Bethel to Atlanta.

This transition has been long in the works and much of its Bethel facility has already shifted to remote work. The company has also been trying to sell the property for some time, so this move is not unexpected.

Unlike General Electric’s departure, which was driven by concerns over Connecticut’s business climate, Duracell’s decision was based on consolidating operations. While Georgia did provide an $870,000 property tax break for their new R&D center, it’s important to note that Georgia taxes personal property—like equipment—at 40% of its value, whereas Connecticut exempts this type of equipment from taxation. This was not a rejection of Connecticut’s policies but rather an internal business decision.

That said, we must continue to strengthen our state’s economy and foster innovation. I have long advocated for raising Connecticut’s R&D tax credit cap to attract and retain high-tech companies, and I will continue working to ensure we remain a competitive hub for research, development, and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, I am already in discussions with state and local economic development officials to bring new opportunities to this site and ensure Bethel continues to thrive.

I appreciate your continued support, and I will keep you updated on our efforts. As always, if you have any questions or thoughts, please feel free to reach out.

Sincerely,

Raghib Allie-Brennan
State Representative
