State Representative Juan Candelaria (D-New Haven) announced today that the National Hispanic Caucus, (NHCSL) will award the John S. Martinez (JSM) Leadership Scholarship to 11 Latino public high school students who reside in the district of a Hispanic state legislator.

The scholarship is awarded to students recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, and their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities.

“Education is the foundation of a strong society,” Rep. Candelaria said. “The JSM Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for students who are striving to further their education and want to become an integral part of our community.”

Each scholarship recipient will be awarded a one-time $3,000 grant towards their higher education in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and leadership.

Rep. Candelaria noted, “This scholarship is in honor of our beloved and the late Hon. John S. Martinez, a Hispanic leader who served as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and a Former President of the NHCSL in 2001-2002.”

Through the JSM Scholarship NHCSL continues its commitment to “Closing the Achievement Gap” for Latino students across the nation.
