Defending Our Rights, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law

April 14, 2025

I was pleased to join fellow lawmakers and advocates this week to reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding Connecticut's residents' rights and the rule of law. The recent onslaught of illegal executive orders from the White House that undermine the Constitution and the rule of law. Every public official and lawyer takes a sacred oath to defend the Constitution, and we must do our utmost to uphold that legally and morally binding promise. You can watch my speech here:
Our nation and our rights depend on us defending
the Constitution and the rule of law.

States, such as Connecticut, have power and authority over numerous areas of law that the federal government does not. We in Connecticut must exercise that power to defend the rights of all our residents. In addition to refusing to obey illegal executive orders from the President, we're protecting Connecticut residents by:

  • Expanding access to the ballot with early and absentee voting
  • Strengthening our first-in-the-nation shield law to protect reproductive freedom
  • Bolstering the Trust Act to ensure our communities are safe and our immigrant neighbors can live without fear

In this moment, every person must ask themself what the can — and should — do to defend our Constitution and the rule of law. Because if, when Connecticut residents' rights are under attack, a public official won't stand up for our rights, what good are they? If, when lawyers and law firms are under illegal attack for their cases or clients, and lawyers won't stand with them, what is the point of being a lawyer? And if we all, as Americans, won't stand up for the rights that embody our ideals, what is the point of this great gift of being an American?

We must all find the courage to stand up for our rights, our Constitution, and the rule of law in the face of these illegal and un-American attacks.
