House Passes Hero Act to Support Our Veterans

May 6, 2025

Last week, in a powerful show of unity, the Connecticut House of Representatives unanimously passed the “Connecticut Hero Act” on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. The bill represents a significant step forward in how our state supports veterans and their families, making key reforms to ensure they receive the recognition, care, and services they have rightfully earned.

As a former Infantry Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and a lawyer who's represented veterans fighting for the services, benefits, and dignity they need and deserve, I have seen firsthand the challenges that come from transitioning from military service to civilian life. From navigating health care and employment to securing stable housing and mental health support, veterans often face complex barriers that require real solutions and a strong, coordinated response from the communities and institutions they served.

The Hero Act is the result of thoughtful, bipartisan collaboration. It a comprehensive package that reflects meaningful dialogue with veterans, advocates, and service organizations. At its heart, it is a shared commitment to honor the sacrifice of those who served by addressing their needs with dignity, compassion, and urgency.

Let's explore how this legislation makes a difference:

Our veterans stood ready to give everything for this country – their safety, their well-being, and in many cases, their lives. They deserve our action, and the Senate still needs to pass the measure before the governor can sign it into law. The Hero Act is one way we can ensure that our veterans’ service is not only remembered, but met with the continued respect, resources, and support they have earned.
