Dear Neighbor,
Happy Friday! This week we formally kicked off our 2024 legislative session. Though this short session lasts from now until May 8, there will be much to update you on each week.

I'm so proud to be back at the Capitol representing the amazing residents of Groton and New London, and I thank you all for the trust you've put in me.

In this week's eblast, you can read about some great news coming to our district, including benefits for veterans and funding for local produce in our schools. You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Free Legal Aid for Veterans in New London
I was so proud to see the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center open a new branch in New London this week, named the Matthew E. Auger USNR Office.

The CVLC provides legal representation at no-cost to veterans, working to secure access to housing, healthcare, and income benefits.

The office is named after Judge Matthew Auger, who bravely served four years in the Navy, retired as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve, and worked as a practicing lawyer and Superior Court judge. Matt passed away last April, but his legacy will live on through this extraordinary new opportunity for veterans.

The office is currently open one day a week by appointment. For more information, you can visit

CVLC's website.

Thank you to law firm Suisman Shapiro for donating the space - if you're a veteran that needs legal help, I truly hope you'll give this group a visit.

You can read more about the new office

here, or in this article from The Day.

Wrong Way Detection Installation in New London
New London residents: please be aware that next Wednesday, February 15 from 7pm through Thursday, February 16 at 5am, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will install wrong way detection systems on the I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 1 south.

Motorists can expect a temporary exit ramp closure to occur at the I-95 southbound off ramp to Route 1 south (Colman Street) in New London. Traffic will be detoured to the Briggs Street off-ramp, take a left onto Briggs Street and go over I-95, take a left onto the Frontage Road on ramp and follow Frontage Road back to Colman Street.

Variable message boards will be set approximately one week prior to the start of this project. Crash attenuator vehicles and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone.

These wrong way detection systems have a proven track record of saving lives, so please maintain a safe speed and respect the construction crew.

Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids Grant Funding in Groton
It was great to see Groton receive grant funding from the Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids Grant this week.
Groton Public Schools, was awarded $250,000 in the shipping container category to install a shipping container hydroponic system at Thames River Elementary School.

The Riverfront Children’s Center, was awarded $36,100 to provide the foundation of an ongoing relationship with CT Grown farms and farmers.

This announcement is a win on all fronts. Our local producers get the critical investment that all small businesses need, our children get access to organic and nutritious meals, and our educators can teach a powerful lesson about healthy lifestyles and how our communities are interconnected.
