Sales Tax-Free Week starts August 17 and Back to School Events

Connecticut's annual Sales Tax-Free Week begins on Sunday, August 17, and runs through Saturday, August 23. This is Connecticut's 26th Sales Tax-Free Week and it provides a chance to save money, whether it is taking the kids back-to-school shopping or treating yourself or your loved ones.

Highlights of Sales Tax-Free Week:

  • Sales or purchases of certain items of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 per item are exempt from Connecticut's 6.35% sales tax
  • Sales Tax-Free Week applies to purchases made in-store, online, mail-order, and over the phone
  • This special exemption applies to purchases made from retailers located in Connecticut as well as from online retailers

It's that time of year when parents, children, teachers, and staff are getting ready to go back to school!

Below are events to pick up school supplies, free of charge, from various community organizations. 

  • Back to Basics, Reed Elementary School (33 Griggs Street), August 16, from Noon to 3:00 P.M. 500 free backpacks, bouncy house, free lunch, family fun.
  • Waterbury Youth Services 28th Annual Back to School Rally, Fulton Park (Pine Street entrance), August 21, Noon to 2:00 P.M. Free resources, school supplies, refreshments.
  • The Blessing in Library Park, August 30, 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Free bookbags, bike giveaway, free household products, as well as ice cream, face painting and balloons.
