Transforming Our Train Station for a Stronger Waterbury

Connecticut is making major investments to upgrade rail infrastructure along the Metro-North Waterbury Branch Line, helping better connect residents to jobs, support local businesses, and strengthen our communities. With work underway in Naugatuck and major improvements coming to Waterbury soon, these projects mark real momentum toward a more vibrant and accessible region.

Let's start in Waterbury, where construction crews will begin modernizing the city's train station in September, backed by a $20 million investment from the state. This transformative renovation will prioritize safety, accessibility, and rider comfort. 

Once completed, the station will be fully ADA-compliant and feature:

  • A modern waiting area
  • New ticket kiosks
  • Real-time passenger information
  • Windscreens for rider comfort
  • EV charging stations
  • Security cameras and emergency phones
  • Rack realignment for smoother, more efficient service
Just down the line in Naugatuck, the state broke ground in mid-July on a new train station closer to the town's downtown center. Scheduled to open in summer 2027, the station will include a 350-foot-long high-level platform, ADA-accessible elevator and stair tower, digital arrival/departure displays, and a passenger waiting area with ticket vending.

The new station will anchor a future walkable, mixed-use neighborhood that links downtown Naugatuck to the Naugatuck River Greenway, boosting both mobility and economic opportunity.
 
For Waterbury, these investments are about more than just bricks and tracks – they're about the future of our city. Improved rail service means faster commutes, greater access to good-paying jobs, and renewed interest in our downtown as a place to live, work, and grow.
