On Tuesday, my colleagues and I on the Appropriations Committee, where I serve as a vice chair, discussed the 2026-27 fiscal year and proposed a $28.8 billion state budget.

In a vote of 38-12 with Democrats as the majority, the proposal would accommodate Medicaid rates, magnet and higher education schools, public transit, and many more vital services that are used every day by many different demographic groups

The proposal would increase spending by 6.2% over the current year, but still remain under the state’s spending cap. I'm encouraged by this plan to offset deep cuts in human services programs.
