Addressing Gun Violence and Injury as a Public Health Issue

April 22, 2019

Joined Majority Leader Matt Ritter this morning to host an Informational Hearing on gun violence & injury as a public health issue. Great conversation on the role healthcare providers can play in addressing this epidemic. The first of many conversations to come! We were lucky enough to moderate a panel discussion featuring influential speakers:

  • Dr. William Begg, Emergency Medicine, Danbury Hospital
  • Dr. Brendan Campbell, Medical Director, Pediatric Trauma Program
  • Dr. Robert Fuller, UConn Health Emergency Department
  • Ms. Katherine Kraschel, Executive Director, Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy
  • Ms. Po Murray, Newtown Action Alliance
  • Dr. Kerri Raissian, Assistant Professor, UConn Department of Public Policy
  • Mr. Jeremy Stein, Connecticut Against Gun Violence

Connecticut has been front and center in efforts to combat gun violence, and we must continue. We need to use a variety of strategies to end this painful epidemic we are seeing across the country. I look forward to a conversation with public health professionals on a new approach-- gun safety screening in the medical setting.
