Reopening Connecticut

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic and daily information on cases and outcomes, we are finally seeing some steady progress towards re-opening.

Thanks to the social distancing measures we put in place and most everyone's cooperation and compliance, we have seen a daily decline in hospitalizations across the state.

As a result, Governor Lamont announced the state will begin a cautious, phased-in re-opening beginning on May 20th.

KEY Points that will contribute to the decision to begin opening the state:

  • A 14-day decline in hospitalizations
  • Increased testing
  • Enough contact tracing
  • Protection for those at highest risk,
  • Adequate protective equipment and hospital capacity
  • Social distancing protocols

Many of us are anxious to resume our daily activities and interacting with family and friends, however we must do so responsibly. The health and strength of our businesses and economy depends on all of us.

I will keep you updated as we make progress and more details are released by the governor's advisory group.

Unemployment Benefits for Self-Employed

If you’re self-employed and haven’t filed, the federal rules state you must file first through Connecticut’s unemployment system to receive a denial that then qualifies you for federal unemployment. If you’re self-employed and filed a claim application, you don’t need to file again. Please note that the PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) application is not yet available. Once it is, I will be sure to let folks know.

Schools to Remain Closed

Although many of us anticipated this, it is still hard for parents, teachers and students to learn that schools will remain closed for academic school year. Distance learning will continue and a decision on camps will be released in mid-May. Congratulations to all of the graduating Seniors on your many accomplishments.

2020 Election

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill has developed a plan for safe access to voting this August & November. I am calling on  Governor Ned Lamont and my leadership in the Legislature to act now to expand voting by absentee ballot to ensure that any CT resident who wants to vote safely during COVID-19 can do so. We've discussed it enough, we must take action.

Thank You to Our Teachers

This week is Teacher’s Appreciation Week! As the daughter of two public school teachers, I’ve always known the commitment and love that teachers bring to their work. Now, after 8 weeks at home attempting distance learning with my kids, I realize it’s a calling. Thank you teachers... for loving & educating our children.

Job Training

Governor Ned Lamont announced the statewide expansion of a program that will make free online learning licenses available to recipients of unemployment insurance, including those who have been impacted by the economic fallout of the COVID-19 public health crisis.

The SkillUp CT program will significantly expand access to comprehensive online course work from a leading global provider for thousands of Connecticut residents. SkillUp CT will allow recently laid-off workers to upgrade their skills and earn industry-recognized certifications even while the doors to most brick-and mortar education and training providers remain closed.

Facebook Live

I had a wonderful Facebook Live conversation with the amazing young men from Conard High School who started WeHa At Your Service— Jett Rosner, Purit Butsapak & Ben Covici!

I am so appreciative for the service these students are providing to our community. We had many special zoom guests join us to show their appreciation, including U.S. Senator Chris Murphy!
