Dear Friend,

This is my State Capitol update for the week of July 5.

If you prefer to watch rather than read, click the image below to hear about the issues contained in this newsletter.

We have weathered a few storms in the last week.  The physical storms in the Northwest Corner resulted in significant power outages, and even longer losses of internet and cable service in several towns.  I hope you’ve all weathered them safely and are now back up and running.  Driving around the district in the last few days, I see trucks everywhere: some repairing storm damage, others repairing roads and bridges that have long needed attention, and still others laying fiber optic cable.  There’s a lot going on, so please be careful and on the lookout for single lanes and stoppages in unexpected places.

In a way, these storms bring out the best in our district, where people care for one another regardless of who they are, where they came from, or whatever political affiliation they claim.  We, and in particular our volunteer first responders, take care of our neighbors when they need help, and it shows.  I thank all of you who eased the problems experienced by many residents when these storms swept through.

We’re looking ahead to the 4th of July weekend, filled with celebrations of many kinds throughout the district (see the rest of the newsletter for more details).  Several of those include fireworks: please exercise care for yourself, and our pets who don’t really understand why we seem to be gleefully blowing up the neighborhood.

As we celebrate our country’s birthday, I’m going to be reflecting on my own deep sense of patriotism for the idea that is the United State of America, freeing itself from a tyrannical and unaccountable ruler, establishing a democratic system of government in which voters choose their leaders.  Though the founders only saw fit to give the franchise to certain white men, we have, after many hard battles, expanded that promise to include black men, and eventually women.  I think it matters to remember how our vision of democracy has changed as we look to ensure our future, while celebrating those who put us on that path.  Happy Fourth!

Free Training Program Offered to Educators
Governor Ned Lamont and the Connecticut Commission on Community Service, also known as Serve Connecticut, are encouraging educators in Connecticut whose schools are currently running youth service-learning programs or who would like to integrate service-learning into their classrooms to participate in a free training program being offered this summer.

Presented by the National Youth Leadership Council, the ASC Summer Training Institute will consist of two half-day training seminars conducted virtually from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 24, 2024, followed by monthly virtual cohort meetings focused on sharing learning and support.

Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that connects academic curriculum to community problem-solving. It is provided at elementary, middle, high, and postsecondary schools nationwide.

Each school can register up to two participants in the training program. Limited spots are available. To learn more and to apply, click here. Questions about participating can be directed to Kate Scheuritzel, Serve Connecticut’s Director of Programs, at Kate.Scheuritzel@ct.gov.

This training opportunity is made available by a grant from the Mott Foundation in partnership with America’s Service Commissions. Serve Connecticut is one of 11 state and territorial service commissions that received a 2024 “Deepening Youth Service” grant to build capacity among youth service providers and champions.
