Hartford's Mary J. Barlow to be Celebrated at 6888 Event
Tomorrow at the State Capitol, the Connecticut members of the Six Triple Eight, the only Black, female battalion to serve overseas during World War II, will be honored at a special ceremony, hosted by State Representatives Andre Baker and Jaime Foster.
PVT Mary J. Barlow of Hartford was one of 855 women - one of 10 from Connecticut - who helped sort through millions of undelivered letters and packages mailed to American troops as part of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion. Their motto was, "No mail, low morale."
PVT Barlow graduated with the Class of 1941 from Weaver High School and was killed in a jeep accident along with two other members of her battalion in 1945. She was 22 years old. She's one of four women buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
