BPRC STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF REVEREND JESSE JACKSON
February 17, 2026
The Black and Puerto Rican Caucus is shaken by the passing of the Reverend Jesse Jackson and sends its heartfelt condolences to the family. We hope you find peace during this difficult time.
As we grieve this monumental loss, we will always remember the Reverend Jesse Jackson as an icon among the Black community, a protagonist of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and ‘70s, a supporter of voting rights, and a supporter of inclusivity for all.
Rev. Jackson was a pillar of influence and strength in the black community and helped pave the way for many leaders over the years. The CT Black and Puerto Rican Caucus will forever appreciate the support he gave our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico during difficult times.
And of course, we will never forget how the protégé of Martin Luther King was once able to capture the attention of many black students across the nation, and ultimately the entire community, reciting the poem which became a civil rights mantra: "I Am Somebody."
We will miss Reverend Jesse Jackson more than we can ever state.
