Memorial Day Events in the 64th

Each of the nine towns in the 64th District will pause this Memorial Day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Some towns are using the occasion to kick off the country’s 250th birthday this summer, so stay tuned for more upcoming events.

Here is a guide to observances in each of our nine towns. The weather forecast for the weekend is a little iffy, so please double check with the town to see if alternatives have been planned. All events take place Monday, May 25, unless otherwise noted.

  • Canaan/Falls Village — the parade steps off at 9:45 a.m. from Lee H. Kellogg School, proceeding to the Town Green for a ceremony with a guest speaker. In case of inclement weather, the Falls Village ceremony moves indoors to the Senior Center.
  • Cornwall — Cornwall marks the day with a series of ceremonies, beginning with a service at North Cornwall Cemetery on Rattlesnake Road at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Seaman’s Memorial in West Cornwall at 10:00 a.m. The parade begins at Hubbard Field in Cornwall Village at 11:00 a.m., concluding with a ceremony at the green.
  • Goshen — Goshen’s Memorial Day Parade takes place on Sunday, May 24. Starting at 2pm. It begins at Goshen Center School, makes its way to Center Cemetery for a ceremony led by the American Legion, and then returns to the school.
  • Kent — Kent’s parade will get organized at Kent Center School at 9:00am, and will commence at 9:30. In the event of bad weather, the parade will not take place and a small ceremony will be held at the Kent Town Hall and lead by the American Legion. The ceremony will be followed by a picnic at 11am hosted by the Kent Land Trust at Kent Land Trust Field, south of the monument.
  • Norfolk — The annual parade begins at 9:00 a.m. at Norfolk Town Hall. The route goes from Town Hall to the Village Green, around the green, and then continues down Route 44 to Memorial Green, where the names of Norfolk residents who served and have passed on will be read. Following the ceremony, the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department hosts an open house with free coffee and donuts. The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department Memorial Day 5-Mile road race will also take place that day: the run begins at 12:00 p.m. and the walking division at 11:30am. Please Note: There is NO registration on race day. All runners need to preregister by Saturday, May 23th. Event information and registration available here, or reach out to (860) 542-5021 or info@norfolkfire.org
  • North Canaan — North Canaan’s parade begins with a lineup at Town Hall at 10:00 a.m., stepping off at 10:30 a.m. and concluding at the Doughboy statue with a ceremony.
  • Salisbury — The town’s Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. The route runs from Scoville Memorial Library down Route 41 to the Salisbury cemetery, where a brief ceremony follows.
  • Sharon — Sharon’s parade begins organizing at Auto Sport on North Main Street at 9:30, with parade beginning at 10am. A ceremony honoring fallen service members will follow the parade.
  • Washington — Washington’s parade steps off at 12:30 p.m. from Washington Primary School and proceeds to St. John’s Cemetery for a concluding ceremony.

ICYMI - Funding for Connecticut Dairy Farms

Connecticut’s dairy farms are small, family-owned businesses that support local jobs and provide fresh, nutritious food to communities across our state. To help sustain these vital local operations, we are proud to announce that $22.5 million has been allocated from Connecticut’s Federal Cuts Response Fund we created to provide immediate relief to the approximately 80 dairy farmers in the state.

Recent federal actions have placed many of these family-run farms under severe financial strain. Much of the pressure stems from federally set milk pricing structures that favor large corporate operations over smaller Connecticut dairies, along with tariff policies that have increased the cost of essential supplies such as fertilizer and farm equipment while triggering retaliatory trade measures from key export partners. In addition, the U.S. conflict with Iran has significantly driven up fuel and fertilizer costs, further burdening farmers already operating on narrow margins.

ICYMI -Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Scheduled for June 20 in Falls Village

Residents of participating towns are invited to safely dispose of household hazardous waste during an upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, June 20, starting at 9 a.m. at the Falls Village Public Works Garage.

Accepted materials include items such as old paint, batteries, and other household hazardous waste. Event organizers encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to properly dispose of materials that could otherwise harm the environment.

Registration is required - please scan the QR code for more information. Residents without internet access may contact their local Town Hall for assistance completing registration.

ICYMI - Grant Opportunity from WBDC

The Women's Business Development Council (WBDC) and Connecticut Office of Early Childhood (OEC) have begun accepting applications for the OEC-WBDC Program Operations Grants.

OEC and WBDC are offering grants of up to $50,000 to qualified Connecticut early childhood businesses to support operations and preserve child care access. The Operations Grant provides short-term funding to support OEC-licensed early childhood education programs. The grants are designed to help programs maintain their existing early childhood slots.

Grants will be awarded to eligible programs serving high and medium-needs families, as defined by OEC. This funding is intended to support operational expenses, including staffing, materials, facility costs, and other business needs that ensure ongoing services to families and communities.

This is a ONE-TIME funding opportunity. Applications will be accepted through May 25.  Click here for more information on eligibility requirements and how to apply.
