Dear Neighbor,

It’s hard to imagine that we will honor September 11th next week for the 23rd time. The weather this week reminded me of how eerily beautiful that week was. I mention this ahead of the anniversary because the public is invited to attend the public memorial in the state’s official ceremony in Westport.

Closer to home, and as they have done every year, the Avon Volunteer Department Headquarters at 25 Darling, Drive at 7:45 a.m. on 9/11, will convene to “remember, reflect, and recommit.” The public is encouraged to attend.

If you’ve driven through Connecticut and crossed state lines, you may have noticed some brand Welcome to Connecticut signs. Or if you haven’t, scroll down to see what the buzz is all about.

Each session I’ve held office, I’ve had an intern during session and I highly recommend it to any student interested in political science, policy work, or governmental studies. More information in this issue on how to apply including an upcoming deadline.

Finally, a note of thanks from me and my family on all of your beautiful condolence notes regarding the passing of my grandfather. Your kindness is greatly appreciated and won’t be forgotten.

Here’s hoping this beautiful weather stays this way for a little while.

Have a great week,

Eleni

The public is invited to attend the State of Connecticut’s annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, honoring and celebrating the lives of those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

This year’s ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on September 5 at

Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

Family members of those who were killed in the attacks will participate, and the names of the 161 victims with ties to Connecticut will be read aloud.

Connecticut’s official memorial honoring the victims of the attacks is located on a peninsula at Sherwood Island State Park, where on a clear day the Manhattan skyline can be viewed across Long Island Sound. The state park was chosen as the site for the memorial because it is the location where, in the hours immediately following the attacks in 2001, many people gathered to observe the smoke and devastation on Lower Manhattan from across Long Island Sound. The same site was also used by the Connecticut National Guard as a staging area for the state's relief efforts in New York City.
