Dear Neighbor,

Fall is the time of year when, as legislators, we start to set our priorities for the next session. I'm attending various information events, conferences, and connecting with other legislators on topics we may tackle during next year's short session.

For instance, last night, I watched the M Factor documentary with members of the bipartisan women's caucus. The topic? Menopause and more specifically how menopause care is finally changing for the better after years of pretending menopause doesn't matter, giving women a shrug when they mention their symptoms at doctor's appointments, and denying that estrogen loss needs to be addressed in many cases to protect women's long-term health. If you can see this film, I highly recommend it.

We also continue to have informational hearings on some of the consequences of H.R. 1 so that we can better prepare and plan for any changes from the federal government that will harm Connecticut residents. The biggest concern around the shutdown is if the tax credits for our health exchange, Access Health, expire, many Connecticut residents will see astronomical increases in their health insurance.

Speaking of health, if you're a veteran, be sure to check out the section below regarding the opportunity to get free dental care via a partnership between UCONN Health and the Tunxis Dental Hygiene School.

Check out Avon and Canton's profiles from the CT Data Project and Advance CT. I love to see how our towns change (and sometimes stay the same) over the course of time—population, major employers, fiscal indicators, and access—all interesting and informative.

I hope you are enjoying all of the fall fairs and finally, some beautiful foliage.

Wishing you a great week,

Eleni

Free Breast Cancer Screenings for Those Who Qualify

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the governor's office and public health officials are reinforcing the critical importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.

Regular mammograms remain the most effective method for identifying breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages.

For Connecticut residents who may not be able to afford regular mammograms, the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s Early Detection and Prevention Program offers free breast cancer screenings. This program is available to those with low income and limited or no health insurance, with services provided at various locations across the state.

Click here for more information on whether you qualify for free screenings, if you need assistance accessing a mammogram, or for other available resources. The Department of Public Health can also be contacted directly at 860-509-7804 for more information.

Free Dental Care for Veterans in Greater Hartford Area

The Connecticut Oral Health Initiative (COHI) has received a $25,000 grant to provide free dental services for Veterans in need and has partnered with UConn Health Center and Tunxis Dental Hygiene School, which will be delivering the care. Please see the flyer below for more details.
