Dear Neighbor,

While we continue to experience unsettled weather, it’s a good time to remind you that when your phone sends an emergency alert or you see one on TV, or hear one on the radio, you must heed the warnings immediately.

While we haven’t been a state that experiences frequent flash flooding, the storm Sunday taught us that as these weather events pop up sometimes faster than a weather person can have time to warn us, the emergency systems that are in place are sometimes a last and not first line of defense. Our district escaped the severe damage seen elsewhere but we may not always be this lucky. Heed the warnings and stay safe.

I’m sharing multiple community events this week and hope you have a chance to plug into them and support the organizations that support our towns. Special shout out to the Canton Volunteer Fire Company for their successful Lobsterfest over the weekend. I enjoyed seeing the many volunteers and families who came out to enjoy the event.

Don’t forget, it’s still tax-free week for back-to-school shopping.

FEMA DECLARATION REQUEST APPROVED IN RESPONSE TO

FLOODING IN CT

Governor Lamont declared a state of emergency after the catastrophic rain that some of our state saw, and as a result, submitted a request for a federal emergency declaration and related protective measures. It was approved on Wednesday
I was on a call with federal and state legislators detailing how people needed to report their damage through their emergency management departments in the towns and cities.

We have 30 days to get a FEMA declaration. Hopefully, the people most severely affected by this in our state will receive the help they need sooner than later.

Rest assured that everything possible is being done to assist people who have lost their homes and fix broken infrastructure as soon as possible. My deepest condolences to the families of the women who lost their lives yesterday. We must all be vigilant as we see increasingly dramatic storms caused by our climate crisis.
