Dear Neighbor,

Happy Thanksgiving! As we enter the holiday season, I hope that your table is filled with family and friends and that you find more to be grateful for than not.

I’m also thinking of our friends and neighbors who will be receiving their meals from our wonderful food pantries and basic service needs organizations. I’m grateful to all of you for your generosity and I hope if you haven’t yet had a chance to give, you will find the opportunity to do so.

Please see the section below on a bipartisan effort to drive more donations to our local pantries not just during the holidays but all year through.

Small business Saturday happens this weekend so as we bid farewell to Thanksgiving and hello to Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanza, I hope you’ll shop local first, last, and as often as possible!

I’d also like to highlight our wonderful Humane Society on their anniversary day. My colleagues and I had a chance to visit last week and what a wonderful service they continue to provide.

Most importantly, I am calling your attention to good news from Eversource regarding the supply side of your bill. They have already announced a rate that’s lower than expected and most likely that means other alternate suppliers will drop in order to stay competitive which means better prices than last winter. It’s not perfect, but it is a step forward. Be sure to visit EnergizeCT.com to shop for your rate.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow,

Eleni

Your Help is Truly Needed This Holiday Season
I proudly joined Sen. Henri Martin (R-Bristol), local officials, and Connecticut Foodshare at a press conference last week to discuss and address hunger and food insecurity in our state. We also hailed Sen. Martin's campaign to promote community involvement to assist food pantries and people in need. He has asked all legislators to get involved to help end this crisis.

As you know, this is an issue close to my heart. So, I'm all in! Please consider joining me in donating at the

Avon Food Pantry, 289 Arch Road, or Gifts of Love at 34 Main Street in Avon or at the Canton Food Bank, located at Trinity Episcopal Church on River Road in Collinsville.

Eversource: Take Control of Energy Costs Before Winter Prices Take Effect
Eversource customers could be paying 39 percent less on the supply portion of their bill than they did last year after the energy company filed new electric supply prices from power generators on Friday. If approved, the new standard service rate for residential customers would receive their energy supply from Eversource would be 14.7 cents per kWh compared to last winter's supply rate of 24.17 cents per kWh.

The new Standard Service Rate, if approved by PURA, would be in effect from January 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024.

Eversource is also offering several options for those who need help negotiating their bills!

  • A new Low-Income Discount Rate will take effect December 1st, which gives customers with a financial hardship status either a 10% or 50% discount off their electric bill per month. Customers can qualify to receive the discount based on household income or receipt of a public assistance benefit. For example, if a customer has a $100 monthly bill, it would be $10 less if they receive a 10% discount or $50 less if they receive the 50% discount.
  • The New Start Program can help customers pay their past due balance in as little as 12 months. If customers make their monthly payments on time, we will subtract some of what is owed each month. (For example, if a customer’s budget payment amount is set at $150 per month and their past due balance is $1,200, for every month they make the required $150 payment towards their bill, we will reduce the past-due balance by $100.)
  • Budget Billing helps avoid seasonal spikes on a customer’s energy bill by letting them pay a fixed amount each month based on their average annual usage.
  • Flexible Payment Plans are available to all customers to help pay their past-due balance over a period of time.
  • The Matching Payment Program can lower the amount customers owe on energy bills. For every dollar they pay and every dollar they receive from the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, we will subtract a dollar from the amount owed.

Eversource is encouraging all customers to contact the energy company at Eversource.com/Billhelp or 800-286-2828 to find out if one of these programs could be beneficial.

Of note: State regulations are being updated to enable customers with a hardship status on their account to switch to a third-party supplier beginning early next year. The energy company is also working with state regulators and evaluating the system changes needed to enable hardship customers to choose a third-party supplier and also receive the Low-Income Discount Rate. Customers can opt out of financial hardship or medical protection status in order to enroll with a supplier before January 1 by completing a form at Eversource.com/supplier.

Small Business Saturday is Around the Corner - Shop Local!
We have a great deal to look forward to in the upcoming days with Thanksgiving celebrations, being together with loved ones, and Small Business Saturday just around the corner on November 25. The latter is a great opportunity to support our local entrepreneurs, artisans, and small businesses that make our community unique and vibrant.

Some of these businesses are still working to recover from the pandemic. Your support can make a significant difference in helping your favorite shops, bookstores, or restaurants bounce back and thrive. The resilience they've shown during such challenging times is truly admirable.

By choosing to shop local, we're not just making purchases; we're investing in our community's vitality and ensuring that these businesses can continue to create jobs, offer unique products and services, and help stimulate our local economy. Let's come together this holiday season to celebrate and support them. It's a powerful way to show solidarity and make a difference.
My colleagues and I doubled down by supporting small businesses during the 2023 legislative session.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, you may want to consider buying gift cards and certificates from a local business. According to Boost Suite, there are 350,376 small businesses in our state, which make up 99% of all businesses in Connecticut. To find small businesses in your area, please click here

Thank you for supporting our locally owned businesses. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season.

Connecting with the Humane Society
My colleagues and I visited the Connecticut Humane Society ahead of today’s Humane Society Anniversary. Our local branch in Newington shared with us what their needs are and how we can best support animals in our state. As you can imagine, we met so many good doggos, a couple of cats, and even some guinea pigs. While they do take in surrendered pets, they also help people figure out if they really need to be surrendered or if they actually need access to inexpensive medical care, food, etc.

Please consider visiting them if you’re looking to get a new pet. They had many animals looking for a good home.

Happy Thanksgiving!
On this Thanksgiving, I wish to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude. In this season of reflection, I am especially thankful for friends like you, the joy of shared moments, and the support that surrounds us.

Our community is strong thanks to our residents and everyone working together to make our state a great place to live.

I am thankful for the opportunity to work for you in Hartford. It is a true honor to represent you.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with the love of family and the company of good friends as we all cherish these moments of togetherness and celebrate the blessings that make life special. Let's also extend our thoughts to those facing difficulties, and think of the importance of compassion and generosity.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Eleni Kavros DeGraw
State Representative
