Dear Neighbor,

We had a very busy Election Day yesterday in District 17. Congratulations to all of the people who were victorious in their races and special thanks to those who courageously put their name on the ballot, but were not successful this time around. It’s humbling to see how many people deeply care for and love their communities through their willingness to serve.

On the horizon, we will be celebrating Veterans Day. While I am sure many of you take every opportunity to thank our veterans, please be sure to extend your gratitude on this day, especially. As we watch the turmoil around the world, we remain grateful for their steadfast devotion to freedom everywhere.

As we head into the holiday season, keep an eye out for opportunities where you can serve and you’ll find one below to get you started.

Don’t forget to recycle your pumpkins at Sub-Edge Farm or if you have the Blue Earth Compost service, I know they will accept up to three per household at no additional charge.

Have a great week,

Eleni

Honoring Our Veterans
While every day is a good day to thank our veterans for their service, we set aside November 11 as the day to remember all of our veterans and to be grateful that they went where many would not choose to go. I’d especially like to thank the veterans in Avon and Canton and our local VFW for their ongoing dedication to our communities. Special shout out to my grandfather, a Navy veteran of WWII, who will celebrate his 99th birthday in three weeks, my father who served as a naval officer in Vietnam, and my husband who served as a Navy Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps after the Vietnam War.

NOTE: November 10 is the observed holiday, as November 11 is Saturday. Town and state offices will be closed.

In Avon: Town offices, public works, the library, the senior center, and the landfill will be closed on November 10, in observance of Veterans Day. The landfill will be open on Saturday, November 11 during regular hours. The library will be open on Saturday, November 11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Canton: Town offices are closed.

2023 Legislative Session
As the wife of a small business owner, I see the struggles that businesses go through firsthand, which is why I have been proud to support legislation that helps people want to start businesses here in Connecticut and policies that help businesses stay in Connecticut.

Thank you to CBIA for recognizing my work this past session.

Avon Library & CT Chapter of United Nations Host
"The Middle East: Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow"
Join Avon Free Public Library and the Connecticut Chapter of United Nations on Saturday, December 2, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., for "The Middle East: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow."

Although much of the Middle East is arid and seemingly barren, millions of people have made it their home since humans first walked out of Africa thousands of years ago. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, has been the source of the Judeo-Christian Tradition, and is now a critical geo-political region, resting on an immense supply of oil and infused with religious dynamism. It has been the focus – for better and worse – of intense Western political activity for more than a century. It is amid realignment with the Abrahamic Accords, as well as playing host for the United Nations Climate Summit later this year. And yet, ancient tensions continually reappear, as can be seen in recent events in both Israel and Azerbaijan. Exploring these issues to clarify the past and consider the future is Hamish Lutris, a scholar with a lifelong interest in the Middle East.

Canton Boat Launch Update
The new Canoe and Kayak Launch Project adjacent to the Farmington River Trail (behind the DPW on River Road) began last week.  Remember that although the gravel parking lot is now temporarily closed, the river trail is still open. When walking on the trail, please follow the arrows and detour signs to bypass the construction zone safely and please be aware of trucks entering and exiting the site. If the weather continues to cooperate, the town anticipates completion by December 8.

Sincerely,

Eleni Kavros DeGraw
