Dear Neighbor,

I’m pleased to share today that I was elected as Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus. I look forward to serving with Representative Kathy Kennedy (R-Milford, Orange). This caucus has always been a great opportunity for women legislative leaders of both parties to come together and support critical legislation that uplifts women of all ages and families. Thank you to my colleagues for your faith in me.

This week, with Senator Berthel (R-Bethel and many other surrounding towns) and I started the process of launching the Feeding CT Caucus. Our goal this year is to start the caucus with a press conference next Wednesday, the 29th at 10:00 a.m. with CT Foodshare to request $10 million dollars in appropriations for the CT-Nutrition Assistance Program. Compared to other states in our area, we are very behind in adequately funding our food banks and pantries. We want to ensure that when people need this crucial social safety net, the shelves are full when they show up at a pantry or foodbank.

The cold weather protocol has been extended for this weekend. As always, if you need a place to warm up both Avon and Canton offer space at their libraries and senior centers during normal hours.

Have a great week,

Eleni

At the 2025 Environmental Summit
Thanks to the CT League of Conservation Voters for inviting me to discuss Affordable Housing at their recent summit. We talked about the need for more housing, including market rate and affordable housing, that must also be resilient in the face of climate change. You can learn more about the CTLCV Environmental Summit here or watch the clip below.

Please Be Careful With Those Portable Heaters
The cold snap in Connecticut may lead some to use portable heaters in their homes to help stave off Jack Frost. Using these heaters come with some risks, however, as they are the leading cause of home fires in January and February.

Here are some precautions you should take, according to FEMA, if you use portable heaters:
  • Turn portable heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.
  • Keep anything that can burn – i.e. bedding, clothing, mattresses, furniture, paper products -- at least three feet away from portable heaters.
  • Plug in portable heaters directly into outlets; do NOT plug them into extension cords or power strips.
  • Inspect and replace damaged cords, broken outlets or loose connections.
  • Use portable heaters with automatic shutoffs so, if they tip over, they turn off.
  • Only use portable heaters approved by a recognized testing lab.

It's extremely important to stay warm, but it's also important to stay fire safe this winter.

Thursday is Maternal Health Awareness Day
Connecticut House Democrats stand strong in our commitment to improving maternal health for all, from prenatal care to postpartum support. We've passed critical legislation like the Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Act and expanded Medicaid coverage to ensure that every patient receives the care they deserve. But our work isn't done—let's continue to fight for better outcomes and a healthier future for all Connecticut families.
