Dear Neighbor,

I’m sure you are all aware of the terrible accident of one of our Avon High School students this past week. It is a stark reminder to all of us that we need to share the road with bicyclists, and we can all use to slow down and pay more attention on the road. I am thankful that the community is rallying around Liam and his family at this incredibly difficult time. More information is below on how you can show your support.

This Saturday, the Canton Fire and EMS Department will hold its grand opening of the brand-new firehouse at 51 River Road. More details are below but I can’t wait to see it soon.

Also included this week are several competitions for students, information on early voting, and climate funding opportunities.

Finally, I want to thank all of our emergency nurses out there doing critical work in local hospitals. Happy Emergency Nurses Week!

Enjoy the crisp fall weather,
Eleni

ON DEADLINE: HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH ESSAY CONTEST
Hispanic Heritage Month runs through October 15th!

You can participate in this month's celebration by encouraging your child to participate in the 17th annual Hispanic Heritage Student Essay Contest for a chance to win a $3,000 scholarship or an iPad.

Middle and high school students are asked to write how they connect with Hispanic culture in 500 words or less.

Participants can select a person, cultural experience, celebration, or tradition that has touched them in a meaningful way and explain why that connection is important. Optimum and Univision Foundation are sponsoring the competition and will accept essays through October 31. There will be a celebratory event for the winners in December. The official contest rules can be found HERE

IT'S ON NOW: CHET DREAM BIG! COMPETITION
I’m proud to support Treasurer Erick Russell’s office and their great annual initiative, the CHET Dream Big! Competition. This is an amazing opportunity for students in grades K-12 to enter and win up to $20,000 toward their future education.

To enter, students answer a question through artwork, an essay, or a video. Younger students focus on what they want to do when they grow up, and older students are asked to describe a lesson they’ve learned or a person who has impacted their lives.

The competition is open to all Connecticut K-12 students, and every child has the chance to participate. Please take a moment to visit the website to learn more, and then encourage your child to take part. More than 250 students will receive monetary prizes to be deposited into a CHET account. For more details, please click HERE.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) recently announced the strategic expansion of the successful DEEP Climate Resilience Fund (DCRF) program to enable communities better to access federal funding for climate resilience.

This upcoming investment of state funds will help towns, Councils of Government, and other stakeholders pursue project planning, and in some cases construction, allowing them to tap into the billions of federal dollars available to improve local resilience.

DEEP is issuing a Request for Information and seeking feedback on two programs. The first is a new DCRF funding category for deployment to give eligible applicants money to build projects that will make Connecticut more resilient to climate change and extreme weather impacts. Second, DEEP is seeking feedback on the design of a new Climate Resiliency Revolving Loan fund that the Legislature authorized earlier this year.

DEEP will hold virtual public meetings on both programs on October 24 and October 30, and written comments are due by November 8. You can find more details

HERE.
