Dear Neighbor,
Happy Friday!

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On the third Monday of January, we take a moment to celebrate the legacy of a consequential figure in American history. Dr. King worked alongside other civil rights leaders, and they were able to successfully push the federal government to pass legislation that required everyone to be equal under the law.

MLK Day is also a national day of service. If you have the day off and are able to volunteer in the community, you can click here to find various opportunities.

It's been a very busy start to our legislative session, and I can't wait to tell you all about it.

In this week's eblast, you can read about the Education Committee's first meeting, a press conference I attended with House and Senate Democratic leadership on our legislative priorities, and more. You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Education Committee's First Meeting
Monday was a special day for me at the Capitol.

I began by helping lead the Education Committee's first meeting alongside my partner in the Senate, co-Chair Doug McCrory.

It was great hearing from every member about what their priorities are for this committee. I'm incredibly honored to be serving as House Chair of the Education Committee, and I can't wait for the work ahead.

Press Conference Announcing Legislative Priorities
Right after our committee meeting, I attended a press conference with House and Senate leadership to announce education and housing as our priorities this session.

It's rare for House and Senate leadership to join together in a press conference like this, indicating how important working on these two issues are to our state.

We have heard loud and clear from our districts that they need the state's assistance to meet the needs of their most specialized learners. I'm grateful that both the House and Senate Democrats are united on our efforts to prioritize special education this session, and I am an eager participant in this work.

Fairfield's One Book One Town Pick
The Fairfield Public Library has announced their pick for this year's One Book One Town event: "Beautyland" by Marie-Helene Bertino!

The book is described as "

a novel of startling originality about the fragility and resilience of life on our Earth and in our universe. It is a remarkable evocation of the feeling of being in exile at home, and it introduces a gentle, unforgettable alien for our times."

If you have read this book or are interested in reading it, you're in for a treat!

On Wednesday, March 5 at 7pm at SHU Community Theatre (1420 Post Rd, Fairfield), Bertino will visit to discuss her wonderful book. Registration has not opened yet, but I will follow up when it is open!

Click here for more information about Bertino's novel!
