Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday!

This week I had the pleasure of joining my colleagues State Reps. MJ Shannon and Kathy Kennedy for a tour of Milestones Behavioral Services, which provides a specialized approach to individuals with autism.

It was a wonderful tour, and I thank Milestones for spending the morning with us, showing us around their program and explaining how they serve our students with the most acute needs. It was powerful to see everything they do to help individuals reach their full potential.

In the rest of this week's eblast, you can read about updates on where the Education Committee stands in the legislative process, events to partake in this spring, and more. You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Education Committee Update

Today, the Education Committee held their final committee meeting, marking an important moment in the legislative process.

The committee has voted joint favorably ("JF'ed") a number of bills out of committee. This indicates the completion of the first screening process for legislative concepts and the next step is that each bill must now be voted on by the House and Senate.

If both chambers vote in favor of the bill, they will be presented to the Governor to be signed into law.

It has been a truly amazing experience serving as co-Chair of the Education Committee so far, and I look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of the great legislation we pass.

Fairfield Food Waste vs. Trash Study

Sustainable Fairfield and two students from Fairfield Warde High School are conducting a Food Waste vs. Trash study to find out how much food waste contributes to Fairfield's trash stream.

A pilot study found 59% of household trash by weight is food waste. These students want to expand that study, and they need our help!

Instructions to participate are below:

Over four weeks, participants will weigh their food waste and regular household trash separately and record this data on a provided form. After that, residents will submit the data form – and that’s it. There are no fees required to participate, and the form will only require a couple of minutes per week to complete.

Please consider participating!

Building an American Voice

Below is a message from the Fairfield Museum:

Since the nation’s founding, there have been fierce debates regarding which members of society had access to the “unalienable rights” of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” articulated in the Declaration of Independence.

In the centuries after America began its democratic experiment, not every voice has been heard. Our "Building an American Voice" exhibition explores moments in local and national history that highlight how people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures took action to advocate for social justice, fought for civil rights, and often succeeded in enacting change.
