Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday!

It was another busy week at the Capitol, and the House passed some great bills that I'll tell you about below.

But first, I want to recognize National Teachers' Day, which was Tuesday.

I have always known the importance teachers play in our society, but as I serve my first term as House Chair of the Education Committee, I appreciate our teachers even more.

I have spent months talking with teachers about the struggles they face in the workplace and the changes they hope to see, and I have been so moved by their stories and passion for the work they do. My time as Education Co-Chair has given me an even deeper appreciation for these heroes who are educating the next generation of leaders.

If you are a teacher, thank you for everything you do. And if you see a teacher this weekend, please thank them!

In the rest of this week's eblast, you can read about bills the House passed this week, upcoming events in Fairfield this weekend, and more. You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Happy Mother's Day!

Honoring all mothers and mother figures this Mother's Day. No matter what the day looks like for you, I am sending you love.

Firefighters Cancer Relief Program

This week, we voted to make important changes to the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program, including, among other things, the types of cancers covered to include skin cancer and authorizing workers' compensation administrative law judges to handle appeals of any denial of benefits.

Taking care of our first responders is always a top legislative priority.

Strengthening Healthcare for CT's Seniors

The House also voted to strengthen healthcare for Connecticut's seniors! This legislation among other things increases access for vital biomarker testing, establishes a task force to address the specific needs of seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia, and enhances safety with improved background checks for all nursing home employees.

This action reflects our ongoing efforts to support and care for our aging population.

Cardiac Screening Program

The "In a Heartbeat" Cardiac Screening Program is a great program designed to prevent death from sudden cardiac arrest by helping detect potential heart disease in children, teens, and young adults, and they will soon be hosting programs in Fairfield! Please see below for upcoming testing dates:
  • Tuesday, May 20, 2:30-6:30pm, Fairfield Warde High School
  • Wednesday, May 21, 2:30-6:30pm, Fairfield Ludlowe High School
  • Tuesday, May 27, 3-6pm, Staples High School
The "In a Heartbeat" program is an amazing and free event that could save a life, so I hope you'll check it out if you can!
