      DOT Event Postponed

      UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Fairfield delegation's meeting with the Department of Transportation scheduled for next week has been postponed. Thank you to all who were planning on attending, and I will update you on any further developments!

      Martin Luther King Jr. Day

      As we approach the weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His leadership led to the success of the civil rights movement, and his actions played a pivotal role in making progress toward racial equality.

      Dr. King continues to inspire and affect racial progress today. His work paved the way for positive change, fostering a society that values justice, equality, and human rights.

      This weekend serves as an opportunity for all of us to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy. We can recommit ourselves to unity and justice while contributing to the ongoing pursuit of civil rights.

      In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, families and friends of all ages are invited to a day celebrating different cultures and communities in Fairfield and Connecticut. Visit the Fairfield Museum on Monday, Jan. 15 from 10am-1pm to explore “Creating Community,” their newly renovated exhibition, and enjoy storytelling with Darlene Kascak from the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation.

      Enjoy many hands-on activities like making family memory keepsakes, a tree walk, and more. Visit their website for the full program schedule for this free event.

      White House Visit Recap
      Below, you can find some pictures from my great visit to the White House for the "Communities in Action" forum:
      I was so proud to visit our nation's capital and talk about all of the benefits Fairfield has received from the Biden/Harris Administration, including:
      • businesses keeping employees on their payrolls;
      • our beloved Fairfield Theater Company successfully keeping their doors open;
      • air filters in our schools, to ensure we can safely get students back in buildings to learn at their best;
      • playground upgrades throughout town; and
      • the Summer Boost program to address learning loss

      In addition to discussing the Administration’s impact on Connecticut, I also took advantage of being at the White House to advocate directly on energy policy and its impact on utility rates.

      As we are working toward an electric future, we need to be thinking 5, 10, 30 years down the road on how we build out our electric infrastructure and ensure we establish a regulatory framework that is looking out for ratepayers when it comes to transmission. We need to fix the status quo so that our clean air goals do not come at the expense of our communities.

      Thank you to all who provided feedback before my visit; this work would not be possible without you, and I carried your thoughts with me throughout my time in D.C.

      Pre-Session Legislative Town Hall

      I hope you'll join me and the Fairfield delegation for a pres-session legislative town hall Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7pm in the Dogwood Room at Fairfield University (1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield). We will talk about the upcoming legislative session, what to expect, and what our legislative priorities are, as well as yours. This event will be a great opportunity to have your voice heard before the work at the Capitol begins Feb. 7, and I hope to see you there!

      Bigelow Tea Shoutout
      Today is National Hot Tea Day, and I was reminded that we are so proud to have Bigelow Tea, the largest tea manufacturer in the country, right here in Fairfield. Founded by Ruth Bigelow in 1945, this family-owned business is currently in its third generation of leadership with president and CEO Cindi Bigelow.

      Bigelow Tea is one of the great success stories of Connecticut businesses, and they capture the entrepreneurial spirit of our state. So this Hot Tea Day, support your local business and buy some Bigelow Tea!

      2024 Environmental Summit

      A reminder that Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters will host their 2024 Environmental Summit at the Connecticut Science Center (250 Columbus Blvd, Hartford). They will discuss important environmental issues including food waste, energy solutions, and reducing vehicle emissions. Climate issues are only increasing in relevancy, and I hope you'll consider attending this important event.

      I'm committed to ensuring your voice is heard. Please don't hesitate to call my office at (860) 240-8585 or email me if there's anything I can do for you. Be sure to follow @LeeperForFairfield on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date on everything I'm doing at the Capitol.
