This specific legislation that we passed allows UConn Health to acquire and save Waterbury Hospital. It is a major step forward for our city and for the people of Greater Waterbury. For too long, our hospital has faced uncertainty that put patients, health care workers, and our entire community at risk.
This initiative doesn't just save a hospital. It secures the future of health care in Waterbury.
By empowering UConn Health to take over operations, we are ensuring that Waterbury residents will continue to have access to quality, affordable gold standard health care — right here in our city. This partnership strengthens our local health care system, protects thousands of jobs, and builds a stronger foundation for the future.
I want to thank my colleagues in the General Assembly, Governor Ned Lamont, Comptroller Sean Scanlon, House Speaker Matt Ritter, Majority Leader Jason Rojas, Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Senator Joan Hartley, the Waterbury House Delegation, both ranking members Rep. Joe Polletta and Rep. John Piscopo, and the leadership at UConn Health for working together to make this possible.
This is what it looks like when we put people before profits and invest in the well-being of our communities.
