Weekly Update

June 18, 2020

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy this nice weather and getting some fresh air.  Even though we are in stage 2 of reopening our state, please remember that we are still in a pandemic.  It is up to all of us to continue to do our part to prevent a renewed spread of COVID, so please keep washing your hands frequently and wear a face covering when you cannot social distance.

And, in case you missed it (ICYMI), below you will find a few updates from this week. I hope you find them helpful.
Today, in another historic decision, the Supreme Court upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA. The program gives temporary protection from deportation to children brought to the U.S. illegally and allows DREAMers to work legally and apply for college loans if they meet certain requirements.
June is pride month, and, in a fitting affirmation, on Monday, the Supreme Court ruled favorably on expanding LGBTQ workplace rights. This historic ruling will extend protections to millions of workers nationwide and is a great victory for all who celebrate a diverse society.

I join with the LGBTQ community celebrating this milestone and hope that this will set a strong foundation for the work that is still ahead.
On June 19, 1865, General Orders No. 3 was read to enslaved African-Americans in Texas by Gordon Granger proclaiming that they were free in accordance to the Emancipation Proclamation— which had been issued on January 1, 1863— We remember this event with the celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day.
Our Women's Bipartisan Legislative Caucus, held a press conference at the State Capitol Tuesday, to discuss our work related to how COVID-19 has impacted nursing homes residents, their families and the nursing home front line healthcare workers across the state and to request that the Governor include areas they have identified as needing review in the independent audit Governor Lamont announced last week.   To view the entire press conference video, please click HERE and for a listing of issues we identified, please click Here.
