COVID Updates & Resources

July 31, 2020
As we approach the end of another week and month in the time of COVID, I hope this finds you healthy and safe. I am happy to report that over the last month our rate of positive COVID cases has ranged between .5 and 1%, some of the lowest numbers in the nation. The biggest spike in recent cases has been among the 10-19 year old population, followed by the 20-29 year olds. These low numbers are thanks to you – your diligence about mask wearing, robust hand and face hygiene, maintaining six feet of distance and remaining outside whenever possible.

Special Session Highlights

Last week the House met in special session, with the Senate following early this week. The General Assembly passed four bills expanding and extending telehealth, capping insulin prices, passing police accountability and assuring access to absentee ballots for all voters for this November’s election. The work with our police departments, on voting rights and for access to affordable healthcare will continue and I look forward to engaging with all stakeholders.

School Re-opening Updates

Many families and teachers are keenly focused on school re-opening. Here in Fairfield, the Board of Education will be re-grouping following the announcement this week that schools are able to decide if re-opening can be done in a hybrid manner.

Superintendents are awaiting a finalized matrix from the Department of Public Health and the State Department of Education to provide specific indicators for decision making. It is expected that the Governor will release a finalized document next week. Superintendent Cummings has delayed the release of our Fairfield survey and parental decision making. I will be sure to share it once the survey is live.
