Fairfield Storm Updates

August 5, 2020
Hurricane season hit hard yesterday and today we are beginning what is likely to be a protracted recovery. Below is information as of mid-afternoon on Wednesday. Given what I have learned, much patience and cooperation will be needed in the coming days. Please reach out if you need assistance.
  • Police say there were over 600 calls for service during the storm yesterday
  • Fire Chief McCarthy says there are 200 streets in town blocked by trees and downed wires - this is a significant event
  • United Illuminating says that 50% of residents are without power (Their website is back up and running for updates)
  • Town officials, per our First Selectwoman, will not be given restoration information until Thursday evening. That is how long they expect it will take to clear, make safe and assess the damage
  • Fire Chief says if you are without power now, expect it will be several days before restoration
  • Charging stations are available at the Police Department and the Bigelow Senior Center - bring your mask
  • Speaking of masks, when you are interacting with first responders, DPW or UI personnel, please wear your mask
  • Avoid downed power lines and assume they are live
  • Save 911 for true emergencies and call UI directly to report power outages (800) 722-5584
  • Never use a generator indoors - be sure that it is at least 20 feet away from doors and windows in order to avoid dangerous fumes
  • Look for additional updates on the Town of Fairfield website

I will continue to share information from our town officials and UI as I receive it. Please stay safe and keep an eye on your neighbors in need of assistance. Please stay safe.
