Updates from Fairfield

August 10, 2020
I hope this message finds you with electricity in your homes. As of 6:15 Monday evening, 356 homes remain without power. I know it has been a long week for so many and we will talk more about this storm and the response, including both a PURA and legislative investigation. This is the beginning of what is predicted to be a difficult storm season, so please check out ready.gov and the Red Cross to be sure you are prepared for the next event.
In the midst of recovering from the storm, facing the pandemic and dealing with back to school decisions, our community has suffered the loss of a Fairfield Ludlowe High School Junior, Jake Panus. Our hearts go out to Jake’s family and all who have been impacted by this tragic accident. In addition, we learned of the death of Tomlinson Middle School teacher, Jim Fedoryk this weekend. At a time when it is difficult to connect in person, we know that our connections as a community allow us to support and care for one another. Fairfield CARES has compiled some resources for students and parents. Please share this with others in the community who may need support during this difficult time.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11th is Primary Day. If you have an absentee ballot, it can be dropped in the official Ballot Box in front of Town Hall. Just today, the Governor signed Executive Order 7MMM allowing residents to mail ballots as long as they have an August 11th postmark. In addition, thanks to our resourceful and creative Registrars, curbside voting will be available at all polling locations for those who will be voting in person. Polls will be open from 6am – 8pm.
Tomorrow is also the re-scheduled Fairfield Board of Education meeting to discuss models for back to school. You can watch the meeting here. In addition, Superintendent Cummings will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday at 7 pm to answer questions and further discuss the back to school plans. You can join via here. Parents of Fairfield Public School students were sent a survey today to express their preferences for return to school. The survey will remain open through Sunday, August 16th.

There is a lot happening in our community right now. What are normally the lazy days of summer are instead days filled with unease, anxiety and now unspeakable grief. Please take care of yourselves and one another.
