January 20, 2022

I have an exciting announcement to share with you all! Earlier this week, I was appointed to be the Vice-Chair to the Human Services Committee. This committee deals with all Medicaid funding and makes up the largest portion of the state budget. The work of this committee is critically important to all our most vulnerable residents and it is a privilege to serve in this leadership capacity. I look forward to serving on this committee to deliver meaningful progress for so many in our community and state.

Juvenile Criminal Justice: A Deeper Dive
Last month, Representative McCarthy Vahey and I held a panel discussion with criminal justice experts and advocates to engage in a productive dialogue about the state of our justice system and where we go from here. While there were many areas of agreement, there were also several areas where there were disconnects and disagreements between what the law allows and how things are operating on the ground.

We think it is important to continue this conversation to get to the bottom of these issues. We've invited Mike Lawlor, a criminal justice professor at the University of New Haven and the former Undersecretary for Criminal Justice at the Office of Policy and Management, along with Detectives Beth Leetch and George Buckmir from the Fairfield Police Department, to continue the conversation.

I hope you can join us on Tuesday, January 25th, at 7pm for Juvenile Criminal Justice: A Deeper Dive. You can register for the Zoom panel by clicking the button below or you can watch the live stream on my Facebook page

Coffee Hour
☕ Due to the rise in COVID cases that we've seen over the past few weeks, I've decided to make the Community Coffee Hour a virtual event. I hope you will join me via Zoom on Wednesday, January 26th from 6:00-7:30pm. I will be there to listen to your ideas and answer any questions you may have ahead of the 2022 legislations session. Food Drive for Operation Hope
There can sometimes be a lull in giving after the holiday season, which is why it is especially great that The Fairfield Equity Coalition is holding a food drive this Saturday, Jan. 15, from 12pm to 3pm at the First Church Fairfield. All donations will be going to Operation Hope. The items of greatest need are listed below.

Please stop by and donate if you are willing and able to! Masks are required.

Red Cross Blood Drives
The American Red Cross has declared a national blood shortage, saying it is the worst they have seen in over a decade. Now is a critical time to donate. Here's a list of upcoming blood drives in the Fairfield area:
  • VFW
    • Tuesday, Jan. 18 from 9am to 5:30pm
    • 465 Riverside Ave, Westport, CT
  • St. Philip's Church
    • Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 8am to 5pm
    • 25 France Street, Norwalk, CT
  • Black Rock Church
    • Friday, Jan. 21 from 12:30pm to 5:30pm
    • 3685 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, CT

You can make a donation appointment on the Red Cross website or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

If you recently tested positive for COVID-19, you must be 14 days symptom free in order to donate blood. If you've received one of the FDA approved COVID-19 vaccines or boosters, there is no deferral time.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Leeper
State Representative
