Dear Neighbor,

West Hartford Continuing Education's collaborative English for Families and Futures program with the Family Resource Center at Charter Oak Academy helps families who've recently moved to our community from abroad strengthen their English literacy skills. This week, I was happy to stop by the FRC to meet some of the residents who are participating in this program and hear how it's helped them transition to life in West Hartford.

LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS
On Wednesday, we passed a bill that would ease some of the financial burden on Connecticut residents and working families whose wallets and budgets have taken a hit due to rising gas prices and record-breaking inflation levels.

We voted to suspend the 25-cent-per-gallon gas tax from April 1st through June 30th, offer free bus rides through June 30th, and create an additional sales tax-free week on clothing and shoes under $100 from April 10 to 16.

We heard the calls from CT motorists who this week are paying an average of $4.33 for a gallon of gas and voted to suspend the 25-cent per gallon gas tax from April 1 to June 30, 2022. We can implement the change without violating any federal or state rules and without impacting our special transportation fund.

It is incumbent upon oil and gas companies to do right by consumers and lower their prices. I hope you join me in calling on them to do so immediately.

We still have to keep an eye on the unscrupulous with respect to gas price gouging. Today's bill would implement safeguards to allow the state to go after companies that do not lower their prices, but remember, if you see something unusual, say something.

Tips to File a Complaint:
  • Identify the specific location of the gas station or business.
  • Identify the date and time of the offer or sale
  • Include documentation, especially receipts.
  • Report the complaint online through the CT Attorney General portal HERE.
Yesterday's vote is a good start and there's more to come. I am committed to creating a fairer tax system and providing greater tax relief for our low and middle income residents who continue to struggle out of this crisis. Please stay tuned as we craft our budget adjustments in the next month or so.

STATE & LOCAL RESOURCES
On Wednesday, March 30, the Metropolitan District will begin the installation of a new water main on Newington Road (New Britain Avenue to Sampson Street) in West Hartford. Construction will start at the intersection with New Britain Avenue and progress south to Sampson Street. During construction hours, northbound traffic will be detoured around the work zone. Southbound traffic will be maintained. Access to local businesses and residential driveways will be maintained. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2022. More information about the project will be available here.

Are you or someone you know thinking about going back to school but may need assistance paying for child care? For a limited time, the Connecticut Care 4 Kids program will help pay child care costs for qualified families who are pursuing a GED or high school equivalency, and undergraduate degree or certificate, or job training. Funding will be available for up to 24 months or until funds are depleted. Families with income up to 60% of the state median income are eligible for Care 4 Kids.
