Dear Neighbor,

It's been nice to have so many things to celebrate in the last week or so. For those of you celebrating new graduates, congratulations to you and your graduate. These milestones that looked differently during the height of the pandemic are now back to their usual pomp and circumstance (pun intended), and I think we are all grateful to see the smiles in person.

This weekend, I'll be hosting the spring pollinator pathway talk in Canton. Don't know what a pollinator pathway is? Come find out!

Next week, I'll be giving the post session "scoop" in Canton and hope you'll join me outside of America the Beautiful for a cone and a chat.

And, finally the week after, I'm hosting a Veterans' Suit Drive at Beanz in Avon. Giving back to our Veterans is something we can all share in.

I hope to see you at one or more of these events in the near future.

Have a great week,

Eleni

Celebrating Juneteenth
Last week, the governor signed legislation we passed during the 2022 session to designate Juneteenth Independence Day a state holiday. The law goes into effect on October 1, 2022. I'm proud to have voted on legislation this session to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday.

Juneteenth Independence Day is the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is a celebration of resilience, of culture and American history. It is a reminder of how far our country has come and how far we still have to go. We cannot understate the importance of Juneteenth. You can read more about this here.

If you're hoping to celebrate Juneteenth, click here for events happening in our region and across the state.

Congrats to the Class of 2022!
Congratulations to the Avon and Canton Classes of 2022! You did it! I can't wait to see what you all will accomplish in this next chapter of your lives and the impact you'll have today, tomorrow, and in the years ahead. Graduating from high school is a meaningful milestone, and I wish you the best as you grow personally and professionally.

Upcoming In-District Events
I'm hosting three in-district events this month! Join me for an Environmental Walk & Talk at the Collinsville Pollen Trail on Saturday, June 18 at 9 a.m. You'll have the chance to learn more about legislation we passed to protect our environment and ask questions. Don't forget to wear comfortable walking shoes!

If you can't make it, come get the legislative scoop on Saturday, June 25 at 3 p.m. at America the Beautiful Ice Cream Shop in Collinsville! Have some ice cream and learn more about the bills we passed this session.

On Thursday, June 30 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., I will be holding a Suit Drive at BeanZ and Co. in Avon! Please drop off used suits that are in good condition and then join me for a legislative overview on veteran services and resources. Suits will be donated to Save a Suit.

I look forward to seeing you!

U.S. Senate Reaches Deal on Gun Reform
A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators reached an agreement on a package of gun safety legislation over the weekend. This breakthrough on national gun reform is the first in 30 years. The compromise would include new funding for mental health and school safety, and to incentivize states to implement red flag laws that allow law enforcement to temporarily take dangerous weapons from people who pose a danger to others or themselves. The proposal would close the "boyfriend loophole" so a spouse or serious dating partner would not be able to purchase a firearm if they are convicted of abuse against their partner. It also strengthens background checks and takes steps to ensure all commercial sellers are conducting background checks.

All good legislation has to start somewhere, and this plan is a promising step toward addressing gun violence in our communities. The proposal has yet to be finalized and must be passed by Congress before going to the president's desk for signing. You can read more about this here.

90,000 Families Apply for CT Child Tax Credit
Connecticut's first ever child tax credit has just gone into effect, and it's already a massive success!

Since applications were first opened to the public on June 1, more than 90,000 households have filed to receive the $250 per child tax credit. These credits, which were included in the $650 million tax relief package approved by House Democrats as part of the 2022 state budget, are set to give much-needed financial relief and flexibility to working families across Connecticut.

If you have a child born before Jan. 1, 2022 and haven't yet applied, I want to remind you that there is still time to apply to receive your check!

This tax credit is available to single parents who earned less than $100,000 and two-parent households that made less than $200,000 during the 2021 tax year.

For more information on the tax credit and to submit an application with the Department of Revenue Services before the July 31 deadline, click here.

2 MW Solar Facility Unveiled in North Canaan
On Friday, I was pleased to join State Rep. Maria Horn, and Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin to celebrate the latest Lodestar Energy project in North Canaan. The project consists of 7,488 solar panels over a 10 acre parcel of land that will generate 2.95 megawatts DC and 2 megawatts AC and is the equivalent of taking 500 cars off the road. Lodestar Energy is an Avon-based company that is actively ensuring Hartford has access to renewable energy sources. This benefits everyone in Hartford County as we address the climate crisis and take steps to transition away from fossil fuels.

Stay Safe on the Water this Summer
Our state has seen an increase in boat sales in the past few years, fueled in part by the pandemic. With this surge has come an uptick in boating accidents. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating accidents in Connecticut increased from 2020 to 2021. Accidents are preventable and it's essential that all boaters, whether they're new or experienced, understand boating safety. If you're planning to head out on the water this summer, here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Always maintain a proper lookout and be aware of other boaters and the environment.
  • There must be one U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person on board the vessel or being towed.
  • Carry all required safety gear, like a Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher, sound-producing devices, etc.
  • Make sure you check the weather before you leave shore.
  • Don't skip a boating safety course or a vessel safety check - did you know some Connecticut boat launches have Boating Education Assistants who will conduct a free vessel safety check?
  • It is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

You can find additional information about Connecticut's boating regulations, safety, how to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive plants and animals, and more in the 2022 Connecticut Boater's Guide. This guide covers everything you might need to get out on the water and get back to shore safely.

Sincerely,

Eleni Kavros DeGraw
State Representative
