Dear Neighbor,

On Sunday, June 19 at 12 p.m., join West Hartford CommUNITY for its 2nd annual Juneteenth Celebration at Blue Back Square. During his event, there will be a Witness Stones Project installation, musical performances, a keynote address from my West Hartford delegation colleague Rep. Tammy Exum and so much more To learn more, please email kristens@whjuneteenth.org

Juneteenth Independence Day is the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is a celebration of resilience, of culture and American history. It is a reminder of how far our country has come and how far we still have to go. We cannot understate the importance of Juneteenth. I'm proud to have voted on legislation this session to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday. Last week, the bill was signed into law. It will take effect on October 1, 2022, meaning that the first time Juneteenth Independence Day is legally recognized as a state holiday in Connecticut will be on July 19, 2023. You can read more about this here.

LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS
Earlier this year, our state launched the Connecticut Essential Worker COVID-19 Relief Fund to help ease the financial burden on essential workers who became ill, were unable to work, or died between March 10, 2020 and July 20, 2021 as a result of COVID-19. The program assists with:
  • Lost Wages – Unpaid leave and lost wages if an employee was unable to work after contracting COVID-19, or due to symptoms later diagnosed as COVID-19.
  • Out-of-Pocket Medical Expenses – For medical services related to contracting COVID-19 that were not covered by insurance.
  • Burial Expenses – Burial/funeral expenses of $3,000 for an eligible essential worker who died from COVID-19.

Families can also apply for any combination of the three benefits on behalf of a qualified essential worker who died after contracting COVID-19. The program is distributing a total of $34 million on a first-come, first-served basis through June 30, 2024, or until the fund is depleted.

If you or someone you know is eligible and in need of assistance, please apply and share the information about the Connecticut Essential Workers COVID-19 Assistance Fund with them so they can apply, too.

STATE & LOCAL RESOURCES
This summer, Connecticut families can learn and play with 8 weeks of free virtual camp for children 1.5 through 5 years old through the Sparkler app! Each week, there will be 5 off-screen camp activities children and their parents, guardians, or caregivers can complete together. There will also be virtual story times led by Connecticut librarians. The camp will start in July and will wrap up in August. For more information about the 8-week camp, please click here.

Don't forget that June is Dog License Month! The West Hartford Town Clerk's Office mailed reminders to over 3,000 dog owners encouraging them to register their dog. All dogs over 6 months of age must be licensed and receive a dog tag annually. The annual cost for dog licenses is $19 for unaltered animals and $8 for neutered or spayed animals. All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies. If the rabies certificate expires before July 1, please include an updated certificate from your veterinarian to register your dog. Applications for dog licenses should be made through the mail to the Town Clerk, Town of West Hartford, 50 South Main St, Room 313, West Hartford, CT 06107, or dropped off at the drop box in front of Town Hall. Applications can be downloaded here.
