Fairfield Shell Recycling Initiative Helps Rebuild Oyster Reefs
Over the past 7 years, the Town of Fairfield's Shellfish Commission has recycled over 79,000 pounds of shells, diverting them from landfills to help rebuild local oyster reefs and grow more oysters. To make shell recycling even easier for restaurants and residents, the Commission will now have a community drop-off site located in front of the Conservation Workshop at 265 Richard White Way. Used oyster and clam shells can be deposited in the large, red recycling bin. You can read more about this here.

Temporary PSLF Program Waiver Ends October 31
Thousands of Connecticut residents have dedicated their careers to public service. The federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program recognizes this choice with complete student loan cancellation after 10 years of public service work and loan payments. Teachers, nurses, government and nonprofit employees, veterans and others are among those eligible for this program.

The temporary PSLF waiver is a time-limited change to PSLF rules that allows borrowers to receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify. This one-time opportunity ends on October 31, which is a reminder to act now and complete an application at studentaid.gov/pslf.

For additional information, including how to get help with your application, you can also visit pslfCT.org.

$46.6 Million for CT Small Businesses
Connecticut will be making a 5-year, $46.6 million investment to expand small business assistance programs across our state to help drive small business growth in underserved areas.

As our state weathers turbulent economic times, this grant program will strengthen the backbone of Connecticut's economy - our small businesses. At least 50% of the funds will go to minority, women, disabled, and veteran-owned companies and startups, as well as those that are located in economically distressed municipalities. Grants will be awarded to local nonprofit economic development organizations that provide a variety of support and programs to small businesses.

This investment is part of a larger strategy to support small businesses and complements the Connecticut Small Business Boost Fund that was launched this summer.

You can read more about this program and find a list of recipients here.

    Supporting Small Business Growth
Connecticut State Community College is launching free statewide small business and startup seminars to help Connecticut's small businesses and entrepreneurs grow and thrive in the post-COVID-19 economy. Seminars will be offered in-person and virtually from October through mid-December and will cover the challenges businesses currently face and tactics to navigate them. Funding for this initiative was included in the state budget that I proudly supported.

You can register for a seminar here. For more information, please contact the Northwestern Connecticut Community College Entrepreneurial Center Director John Fiorello at jfiorello@nwcc.edu.
