Dear Neighbor,

I want to make you aware of some tragic news in our state. First thing Thursday morning, after a night celebrating at the Governor's Ball, I was made aware of the devastating news that my friend and colleague, State Representative Quentin "Q" Williams, had been in a fatal car accident on his way home. He was struck head-on by a car going the wrong way on Rt. 9 in Cromwell. I hope we will tackle this specific issue- and increased traffic fatalities more broadly- this session, but right now, we are mourning and reflecting on the beautiful life of Q. I hope you will take a few minutes to read some of the many tributes about Q because you will see a common thread through them all- he was a man full of joy, principle, and passion for improving the lives of everyone around him. State Representative Palm wrote a touching tribute, which you can read by clicking here.

I was first elected in the "covid class," and building relationships virtually was often difficult. Q picked up the phone and connected with me regularly about our shared passion for education and investing in all our young people. He had founded the Main Street Working Group and when he learned I was interested in the work, he invited me to be a Co-Chair. That is how Q was, always going out of his way to connect with people and provide opportunities to everyone around him. Q radiated positivity and was a source of light for all those in the legislature and his community. I will miss hearing his infectious laugh throughout the halls and seeing his megawatt smile. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to witness his passion in the House Chamber. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Carrissa, mother, Queen, and everyone who loved Q.

For those who wish to attend, there will be a vigil remembering Representative Quentin "Q" Williams tonight at 7:00 PM on the South Green in Middletown, CT.

The 2023 Legislative Session
On Wednesday, I was honored to be sworn in for my second term. While we will be starting with heavy hearts, the 2023 Legislative Session has officially begun.

Every time I step into the House Chamber at the Capitol, I am humbled by the responsibility, the history, and the privilege it is to be here. This year was even more meaningful because I could experience a traditional swearing-in ceremony and share it with my family. I know my boys are little, but I hope they recognize how solemn this job is and the power of civic engagement.

I'm eager to get back to work for the 132nd District. We have a lot of issues to tackle this year, but I'm hopeful we'll carry last year's momentum into this Legislative Session and make meaningful advances that benefit my constituents and the State of Connecticut.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Leeper
State Representative
