Dear Neighbor,

Law Enforcement Officers take an oath to serve, but most importantly protect, our communities. I’m sick that we continue to watch this truly heinous and brutal behavior continue as if it’s okay. As a legislator – but also a fellow Law Enforcement Officer – it’s time for action and I want to call upon my colleagues in uniform to do better. Do not turn a blind eye, do not be fearful or intimidated, we must all stand up and speak out if we want to see these tragedies end.

My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of Tyre Nichols, and the entire community.

You can read my comments on this tragedy in a recent article in The Day, found here

Calling for Support of the English Language Learner Parent Bill of Rights
I had the great opportunity to attend a press conference in support of the English Language Learner Parent Bill of Rights. This bill enumerates the rights of English language learner (ELL) students and the responsibilities of local and regional boards of education to educate such students.

If passed, this bill would address the current inequities in education for ELL students in Connecticut public schools, such as quality of interpretation services for ELL parents and students, as well as detailed information about the different topics related to education or bilingual education.

AFT Connecticut Calls for Support of Nurses
Unfortunately, I was unable to join the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Connecticut, healthcare workers, and my fellow legislators who held a press conference last week to call for a plan to address the staffing crisis. But, I'm a strong supporter of Connecticut's nurses.

This is a vital workforce and we must try our best to do more to support AFT Connecticut, especially when it comes to overtime and safe patient limits.

Sharing Voices of Diversity Event
I had the great opportunity to attend Waterford Rise this week and hear Curtis Goodwin taking part in their "Sharing Voices of Diversity" event. Thank you to Waterford Rise for yet another great event!

Holocaust Remembrance Day
With each passing year, as fewer and fewer survivors remain to share their stories of lives lost and lives rebuilt, we must teach accurately about the Holocaust and push back against attempts to ignore, deny, distort, and revise history.

This week we honor the victims, learn from the survivors, pay tribute to the rescuers, and carry forth the lessons of last century’s most heinous crime. From the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, to a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, we are continually and painfully reminded that hate doesn’t go away; it only hides. And it falls to each of us to speak out against the resurgence of antisemitism and ensure that bigotry and hate receive no safe harbor, at home and around the world.
