Updates from State Rep. Chris Poulos - February 3, 2023

February 3, 2023

Extreme cold weather is expected in the coming days across Connecticut. It is important to be mindful that with it brings increased risks to ourselves and our community.

Temperature related health problems, such as frostbite and hypothermia, can take effect quickly and it is important to understand the symptoms. Keeping warm indoors is critical; if you are struggling with heating costs, or need advice on energy assistance programs, a number of resources are available here.

The Department of Public Heath's cold weather safety guide, and other information relating to winter safety and dealing with cold temperatures can be found here.

In response to the freezing temperatures, the Governor has activated Connecticut's Severe Cold Weather Protocol. The protocol goes into effect at noon on Thursday and stays in effect until Sunday at noon. The cold weather protocol aims to ensure that people who may be exposed to the cold weather have access to shelter for this time. If you or someone you know needs shelter, please call 2-1-1 to be directed to a nearby location and transportation if necessary. Click here for more information.

The Southington Public Library is a designated warming center from Thursday at noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday. The hours are:

  • Thursday: 12-8 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m-8 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Calendar House will also serve as a warming center on Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and the Southington Police Department is available after hours.

Supporting Small Businesses

Great to tour Southington Wine and Spirits recently and talk with local business owner and Southington native, Nick Conti, about supporting our town’s small businesses, which as a member of the Commerce Committee is one of my top priorities.
