Donating to the Turkey Earthquake Relief Effort
I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of life in Turkey following an earthquake that killed at least 42,000 people. The Turkish community in our state has come together to help the families of the victims. On Monday, I presented a $1,000 check at Sultan's Turkish Restaurant on behalf of the Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury and President Victor Lopez Junior. The money is going to the Turkey relief effort.
Sultan's Restaurant in Waterbury and Diyanet Mosque, a Turkish mosque in New Haven, have collected donations in the past few weeks. Concerned residents have been calling both organizations every day to help.
Senator Richard Blumenthal visited Sultan's Restaurant on Monday to raise awareness on donation efforts. At this point, organizers encourage residents to provide monetary donations. While sending supplies is helpful, it will take time for them to get to the affected areas and the shipping costs are significant.
Sultan's Turkish Restaurant and Diyanet Mosque are both taking monetary donations that will go to the relief effort.
