Support for Proposed Student Loan Reimbursement Program

March 29, 2023

I stand firmly behind a proposed student loan forgiveness program that may include up to a $20,000 reimbursement for some Connecticut residents. House Bill 6901 would establish a student loan reimbursement pilot program for those who live in Connecticut, graduated from a state college or university, and work in certain professions such as nursing, teaching, childcare, and more.

HB 6901 would help residents hit hardest by the student loan debt crisis by reimbursing up to $20,000 if the borrower:
  • graduates from any Connecticut-based college or university (including vocational schools)
  • stays in Connecticut for five years
  • is under 40 years of age
  • performs 50 hours of volunteer service per year for a certified 501c3 non-profit.
Connecticut is the fifth-highest debt holder in the country, with nearly $17.8 billion held among 500,000 borrowers. This significantly affects Black and Brown communities as well as women.

Now is the time to act and support those who need it most.
