Dear Neighbor,
Passing of New London Public School Student
It is with a sad heart in the passing of a beautiful young queen in our community that I have been in contact with many youth grieving and looking for peace. If you know of any youth needing someone to talk or wanting to meet, please share - we are here. Going through grief and pain of the loss of a loved one and friend is not easy. Honoring D'Nazia Uzzle
I visited the City of New London, Connecticut Multi - Magnet High School several days this week. I was able to meet and chat with several youth as they honored one of their amazing peers, D'Nazia Uzzle with a pink out day. It was very heart warming to hear and understand the great impact D'Nazia carried with many friends. I will always have great memories knowing D'Nazia since her elementary school days. I pray God provides family and friends the needed comfort, peace, and strength to deal with this tragic loss.

HUSKY For All Press Conference
Next Tuesday, April 25, I will be joined by Husky 4 Immigrants, CT Students for a Dream, and fellow legislators to host a press conference advocating for HB 6616, which expands HUSKY health benefits to those ineligible due to immigration status.
The event will be held at Room 1C of the Legislative Office Building, and I hope you'll join me to discuss this important piece of legislation.

Women-Owned Business Day
I hope you'll join me next Wednesday, April 26 at 10:30 am for the 2023 Women-Owned Business Day to celebrate women-owned and led small businesses in Connecticut.

Over $120,000 has been given to 13 women-owned businesses in my district since 2020, and I'm excited to see what comes next.

HUSKY Expansion
Lets make so much difference that no one is treated different. This week I met with advocates in regards to fighting for change for HUSKY expansion. Lets fight to make that change.

Funding for School Lunches
Unfortunately at this time, funding for universal school meals was not in the recently released budget. Today I was proud to stand with legislative colleagues State Representative Gary Turco, State Representative Anne Hughes "End Hunger Connecticut" and the United Way of Southeastern, CT at a press conference to further advocate for the addition of funding to keep feeding our youth free meals in schools.
I, along with many other advocates, believe we have a responsibility to ensure our kids do not worry about being hungry while in school. No child should worry about a stigma of not being able to afford lunch; not only the affordability but also being able to eat a healthy lunch. Funding universal school meals in every community across the state ensures that we can reduce a barrier for students' ability to learn, or worry about criticism in regards to eating.
We plan to keep working hard toward making universal school meals a reality to ensure no child in the classroom goes hungry in Connecticut again.
I personally want to thank the Brigade Chefs and staff in the New London Public Schools for the amazing meals they create for our children along with the Wednesday meals they provide for the City of New London, Connecticut community. https://www.facebook.com/chefsbrigaid?mibextid=ZbWKwL

Theater Tax Credit
So glad to co sponsor HB 6919: An Act Establishing a Tax Credit for Certain Pre-Broadway and Post-Broadway Theater Productions. This is a committee bill that was initially introduced by State Representative Treneé McGee to establish a credit for certain expenditures of accredited theater productions at qualifying production facilities in the state.

Legislative Interns Mock Session
Legislative interns did an amazing job with their mock session. It was so great to see them stand up and use their voice in regards to concerns and issues in the Legislative Office Building. Great job y'all.

Culinary Class Visit
As I visited the school this week, I had the great opportunity to visit Chef Tom, Chef Ben & the culinary class in the City of New London, Connecticut Multi-Magnet High School to see the students take pride in learning and cutting up a whole pig. Professional butchers from Salem Prime Cuts guided the students in how the class will use meat from the whole animal to make various preparations, including head cheese, sausage, bacon, and braised pork shoulder.
Having these culinary training opportunities builds their skills, and offers the food-related experiences students have in school to set them up for success, both personally and professionally, in the future!

It is your right to do so in dignity and without fear of discrimination because of your race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, national origin, or because you are disabled or have children in your family or are pregnant.
Fair housing in Connecticut also means you may freely choose a place to live without regard to your age, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation or lawful source of income (which means that income from social security, SSI, housing assistance, child support, alimony, public or general assistance should not restrict your housing rights).
