Pride Month, Sustainable Event, and more

June 5, 2023

Dear Neighbor,

Happy Monday! We are now embarking on our 3 final days of the 2023 legislative session. We are expected to vote on the next biennium budget later tonight, which represents the bulk of the important work we do. Nonetheless, I also want to highlight a few upcoming events in Fairfield. For your convenience, here are some helpful links to all the information included in this email:

Pride Month
This June feels different than others. PRIDE is arriving amid a slew of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills and growing hostility across the country. It is more important than ever to step up our allyship and speak out against this hatred. When lives and rights are under attack, we must get serious about how we're standing up and supporting LGBTQ+ community.

"When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free." - President Barack Obama

Next Thursday, June 15, the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Pride flag raising at Town Hall at 5 pm, immediately followed by a Rainbow Rendezvous at Burr Mansion. There will be music, food, games, and more, and I hope you'll join me for this inspiring and fun event!

Help for Husky Health Customers
Access Health CT is working with HUSKY Health customers to ensure they avoid any coverage gaps after the passing of recent Medicaid Unwinding legislation. It is a term the federal government uses to describe the process of resuming the regular annual review of households for Medicaid eligibility after a three-year hiatus during COVID. The eligibility redetermination process resumed on April 1. The Medicaid Unwinding process will be taking place over a 12-month period.

If you remain eligible for HUSKY Health, you will likely be automatically reenrolled. Those who need to act will receive mail with instructions about the next steps. Connecticut residents who are no longer eligible for HUSKY Health may become eligible for other no-or low-cost health coverage available through Access Health CT (AHCT). Other options include the Covered Connecticut Program, which provides no-cost coverage for eligible residents or a Qualified Health Plan (QHP) through AHCT, which is often available at a lower cost to residents if they qualify for subsidies. Those that need to choose a new health coverage option may enroll before the end of their Medicaid coverage to avoid a gap in coverage. Those folks will have 120 days to enroll after the loss of Medicaid coverage.

Living More Sustainably Event
Tomorrow, the Fairfield Public Library will host "Living More Sustainably - Saving Money While Helping the Environment." The event is in the library's Rotary Room from 6 - 7:30 pm.
Come learn about new tax incentives to make your home more energy efficient while saving you money on your utility bills. Home energy audits can save you hundreds of dollars a year. The new Inflation Reduction Act as well as other Federal and State incentives offer substantial tax incentives (up to several thousand dollars depending on income)  to help retrofit your house with heat pumps, insulation and energy efficient appliances. Click here to register.

Summer Saturdays
Last Saturday, the Fairfield Museum and Historical Center held their first "Summer Saturdays" on the Museum Commons. The event - which allows people to explore the historic properties and try hands-on activities - runs every Saturday through September 2 from 11 am - 2 pm.
More than 400 years of diverse stories can be found in the Victorian Barn, Sun Tavern, and Victorian Cottage, which has a dedicated early childhood space. Donations are welcome. Summer Saturdays are rain or shine!

New Pocket Park
I wanted to highlight the small but mighty Pocket Park on 1720 Post Road:
It may be a small plot of land, but putting Pocket Parks throughout our neighborhood helps to build a sense of community, plus it gives back to the environment. I encourage you to check it out if you can!

I'm committed to ensuring your voice is heard. Please don't hesitate to call my office at (860) 240-8585 or email me if there's anything I can do for you. Be sure to follow @LeeperForFairfield on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date on everything I'm doing at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Leeper
State Representative
