Dear Neighbor,

2023 Session Recap
This year's Legislative Session started off with a tremendous loss. We leaned on each other and found ways to smile while fighting for the citizens of Connecticut. I hope we made you proud, Q.
The 2023 Legislative Session was unlike any other. Take a look back at the ups, downs, smiles, and several moments of bipartisanship. It was an honor to serve you.
Thank you for trusting me to represent you. It was an honor to serve you in the 2023 Legislative Session. Take a look back at the last few months.

DVA 2023 Municipal Veterans Representative Training
I had the great honor to attend the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs 2023 Municipal Veterans Representative Training at the Gold Star Families Memorial Auditorium Rocky Hill, CT.

The Municipal Veterans Representative program is a required program by statute. The program allows us to directly communicate with the appointed Veterans Representatives for each municipality. More importantly, it provides our municipal partners the opportunity to provide direct feedback to us and to share best practices with each other.

Thank you to Commissioner Ronald P. Welch, Deputy Commissioner Joseph Danao, John Carragher Office Of Advocacy And Assistance CT Dept Veterans Affairs and the 70 plus municipal Veterans Representatives that came out for the training workshop and receive certificates for the hard work.

CareerConneCT Rental Relief
Gov. Lamont announced his administration is designating $30 million of federal COVID-19 relief funding that Connecticut received to make rental assistance stipends available for qualifying participants of CareerConneCT, the state’s signature workforce training program, as well as individuals participating in other federal-funded training programs.

Administered by the Connecticut Office of Workforce Strategy, CareerConneCT connects jobseekers with free, short-term job training programs that provide them with the skills needed to obtain employment in several high-demand sectors, such as manufacturing, information technology, health care, infrastructure and clean energy, commercial driving, and more. The program collaborates directly with Connecticut employers who are seeking to hire, giving participants an opportunity to directly connect with available job openings.

Participants in CareerConneCT also receive free supportive services while in training, including transportation, childcare, and housing. The rental assistance stipends will augment these supports, providing qualifying participants with between three to nine months of assistance, with a maximum of $15,000 per household. To qualify, participants must have a household income of 80% of the area median income (AMI). These one-time funds are limited, and anyone interested in participating is encouraged to enroll in CareerConneCT and apply for the stipends as soon as possible.

To enroll in CareerConneCT, jobseekers should register online at portal.ct.gov/careerconnect. Applicants will be matched with a case manager, who can apply for the rental assistance stipends on the participant’s behalf, in addition to connecting them to the appropriate training and additional supports. The stipends will be disbursed to eligible participants three months at a time base on prospective rent (not back rent) and are intended for those who are participating in the job training programs. Participants must have a landlord/rental lease and cannot be subleasing.

National Coast Guard Museum
New London ― The footprint of the future National Coast Guard Museum has taken shape on the city’s waterfront and the stage is now set for the second phase of the $150 million project.
The National Coast Guard Museum Association announced last week it is ready to go to bid this week on the work to create the foundation for the more than 80,000-square-foot, six-story museum that will occupy a prominent place on the city’s waterfront.
“Moving into summer of 2023, we are thrilled to be launching this next phase of construction. It is an exciting and significant milestone for us as we build the museum’s foundation,” retired Coast Guard Captain Wes Raymond Pulver, president of the National Coast Guard Museum Association, said.
The museum site is situated behind Union Station and nestled between City Pier and the Cross Sound Ferry’s busy ferry terminal. The 295-foot-long U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle, known as America’s Tall Ship, has secured a berth adjacent to the museum.
Completed work on the first phase of the museum project included dismantling of a portion of City Pier and installation of a bulkhead wall to create land where there was once water.
The upcoming work will include the installation of about 240 micropiles, essentially rods that will be drilled into the ground and into the bedrock below to provide the structural stability needed to support the building, said retired Coast Guard Capt. Mark Walsh, chief operating officer for the National Coast Guard Museum Association.

Sound Community Services Team
Allow me to introduce the Client Access Representative (CAR) Team at Sound Community Services. In a recent Front Desk Satisfaction Survey, the clients at Sound raved about this truly amazing team, here is what some had to say:
• I'm always greeted with kind words, friendly demeanor and smiles which makes the whole interaction pleasant.
• Love you guys, saved my life.
• I always look forward to coming in seeing the staff. They're really kind, and always put a smile on my face. Very supportive. They would get a rate of A+ from me.
• I'm grateful and thankful.
* Jennifer has been with the agency for 5 years, starting as IOP Driver and transitioning to Employment Services, AXS Case Manager, and finally as our Greeter “wondah-ful Jenni-fun greet-ah.” Her energy welcomes all who enter the building and greets you with a friendly smile, hello, and “how ah ya.” She is also the founder and face of our very own Jenn’s Closet.
*Jessica has been with the agency since October 2021 as a Client Access Representative and works per diem with our Residentials. Jessica’s “home” is the tropical climate “bubble” on the first floor and is the first person you see when entering the Clinic. Even though Jessica’s tenure is not extensive, she is the go-to person for help in accessing services in the Clinic and has a knack for connecting with the young adults in the Residential Programs.
*Karla, a Client Access Representative, recently had her one-year anniversary with them, and despite being here for a short time, it feels like she has been with the team forever. Karla can be found at the first main office window, walking the building or grounds, or teaching our ESA dog Ella Spanish commands. Karla has a smile for everyone, a listening ear for clients and staff, and kind words for all.
*Angela is their newest Client Access Representative and completed the team they’ve been trying to put together for quite some time. She has two passions in life: her children and the TV show “Friends.” Angela is the quickest Spanish translator this side of the Mississippi, is a fast learner, and has a heart of gold.
*Karen is the Clinic Office Manager and fearless leader of this stellar team. She began with the agency first as a Client Access Representative and in her current position has morphed the Clinic into a tightly run ship. She tackles any project with fervor and speed and can be best described as a “Mama Bear.”
As a team each person has their unique strengths. Karla is the scheduling pro, Jessica knows how to manage the challenges of referrals, Angela is the go-to translator, and Jennifer is the client ID picture queen. Karen is the wrangler of it all, managing the referrals, client services, staff requests, and schedules so it all flows smoothly. Together they are the dream CAR Team, and they could not provide the premier services to their clients without them. Thank you for all you do!
