State Representatives Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D-Bridgeport, Fairfield) and Marcus Brown (D- Bridgeport), State Senator Marilyn Moore (D-Bridgeport, Monroe, Trumbull), and Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick applauded the allocation of $2.5 million to the Rooster River Flood Mitigation Project to the town of Fairfield. 

This project continues Rooster River flood mitigation efforts in Fairfield and Bridgeport. These critical infrastructure funds will help to mitigate the destruction of property that occurs due to extreme weather events such as those seen this week. 

“The extreme weather this week has underscored the importance of Fairfield and Bridgeport’s ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding along the Rooster River watershed,” Rep. McCarthy Vahey said. “Thousands of residents who have suffered property damage, some repeatedly, will benefit from the ongoing work made possible by both these funds and future funds for Bridgeport. I am grateful to Governor Lamont and our legislative leaders for providing these funds to address inland flooding.” 

“This investment in the Rooster River Flood Mitigation Program will finally address flooding issues that Bridgeport and Fairfield residents have dealt with for many years. I commend my colleagues for their outstanding work in securing this funding which will give residents living along the Rooster River a better quality of life,” said Rep. Brown. 

“We cannot let this community suffer through this nightmare again,” said Sen. Moore. “This necessary funding will help put an end to the flooding issue created time and time again by the Rooster River. Families shouldn’t have to worry every time it rains.”

This green infrastructure will help build resilience across the state, safeguarding communities from the impacts of climate change." 

“I was thrilled to learn the town will receive additional funds from the state to assist with the town’s efforts to mitigate flooding in the Rooster River areas that stretch from up by Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course all the way to Commerce Drive impacting residents and businesses. I was grateful the town’s funding bodies approved my request last year for $3.2 million to start the process for the Phase I Rooster River flood mitigation plan which has been on the Town and State’s project list for over two decades,” Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said. “We’ve been diligently working to obtain permits from the state to implement our plan and are awaiting approvals expected this Fall. I want to thank our state delegation for making this a priority and Governor Lamont for his support for this very important infrastructure project for Fairfield.  These funds will allow us work in tandem with Bridgeport on our shared impact from Rooster River flooding.”
