State Funding to Fix Up Blighted Properties

July 13, 2023

Waterbury will receive $303,000 in state funds to cleanup and revitalize two separate projects containing blighted properties with the hope of bringing economic development and job growth to our community. The money is the result of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development's Brownfield Remediation and Development Program.

$160,000 will go to conducting a site investigation at 194 and 196 Mill Street, totaling 2.45 acres, to determine the type and extent of contaminants there.

$143,000 in grants will be used to perform a similar site investigation on two parcels of the Waterbury Industrial Commons, which are located at 2121 Thomaston Avenue and Commons Court. The work will determine what kind of how many contaminants are situated on the 5.68-acre site.

In total, the state is spending $23.8 million to remediate 480 acres of land across 22 properties in 15 towns and cities across Connecticut and put them back into productive use.

The funding shows that working together will move Waterbury forward. I thank Governor Ned Lamont, my colleagues in the legislature, and the hard-working local elected officials and town staff members for their tireless work to revitalize blighted properties.
