STATE REPRESENTATIVE MARYAM KHAN TO CHAIR BUILDING EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY WITH GREATER IMPROVEMENT NETWORKS COMMISSION

Commission serves to study education funding and accountability measures

State Representative Maryam Khan (D-Hartford, South Windsor, Windsor) today announced her appointment as Speaker of the House Matt Ritter’s designee to be Chairperson of the Building Educational Responsibility with Greater Improvement Networks Commission.

The commission, which originated from Public Act No. 23-167, serves to study various educational issues including funding for local school districts, charter schools, and magnet schools, and related accountability measures.

“It is an honor to be appointed Chair of this commission,” Rep. Khan said. “By conducting a comprehensive study on funding and accountability measures, we can provide fact-based recommendations to improve our public education system. That includes equitable distribution of funds to our schools and ensuring we have a transparent system that benefits students, teachers, and the overall quality of Education in Connecticut. I am thankful to Speaker Ritter for this opportunity.”

The commission is required to report a study on four key areas, including:

  • Funding for school districts, charter schools, and magnet schools

  • Oversight policies for alliance districts, charter schools, and magnet school programs related to accountability measures, financial reporting, enrollment, and funding

“Representative Khan’s experience as an educator and board of education member make her a perfect choice to chair the Commission,” said Speaker of the House Matt Ritter (D-Hartford). “This is important work that paves the way for future legislative action on education funding.”

The commission must submit its report on educational funding, charter schools, and magnet schools - with findings and recommendations - to the Education and Appropriations committees by Feb. 1, 2024. The remaining portion of the study must be submitted to the Education Committee by Jan. 15, 2025.
