Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! As the weather has started to cool down from the historic heat we experienced last week, I hope you've found time to enjoy the great outdoors and some of our beautiful state parks or free museums with your friends and family. There are some great upcoming events in Fairfield in the next couple of weeks, and I encourage you to check them all out!

Below, please find information on a bill supporting our firefighters, the Fairfield Sidewalk Sale and Street Fair, and more. You can use the links below to navigate between sections.

Firefighters Cancer Relief Benefits
I want to highlight a piece of legislation I’m really proud of from our session. The original bill was wrapped into the budget implementer, so it went under the radar, but in my view is a critical and long overdue piece of legislation.

The bill's aim is to help firefighters who contract cancer as a result of job exposure. It requires that firefighters who have certain cancers and meet specific criteria receive workers' compensation-like benefits and disability retirements benefits. It also creates a Firefighter Cancer Relief Fund Advisory Committee to evaluate the account that pays the firefighters, and requires the treasurer to annually report on the status of the account and the existing Firefighters Cancer Relief Program.

With the recent headlines of record breaking heat, dangerous air quality, and Connecticut firefighters traveling to Nova Scotia to combat wildfires, it is clear climate change is creating challenges ahead for our firefighters. This bill ensures our firefighters and their families are supported if they have to deal with work-related cancer, and I'm so proud this bill became law because I believe it’s our obligation to take care of our firefighters when they suffer illness due to their care of us.

Fairfied Sidewalk Sale and Street Fair
This Saturday, July 15 from 10 am - 4 pm, the annual Fairfield Sidewalk Sale and Street Fair will be held! There will be special deals and discounts at participating shops and in booths set up on Sherman Green. From the latest fashion apparel and jewelry to sporting goods and best-selling books, there’s something for everyone! Shop the summer’s hottest deals offered by Fairfield’s local merchants - I hope to see you there!

Pequot Library's Summer Book Sale
One of my favorite events of the summer returns next week: the Pequot Library's Summer Book Sale! The five-day event starts Friday, July 21 from 9 am - 6 pm. Saturday through Monday it runs from 9 am - 5 pm, and Tuesday is 9 am - 2 pm.

The book sale is one of the largest in New England, and has over 100,000 items in over 50 categories - there's something for everyone!

There's nothing better than picking up a book you otherwise never would have found and getting lost in its pages, and that's what makes this book sale so special. Admission is free, and all proceeds support Pequot Library’s books, services, programs, and exhibitions for adults and children, serving more than 30,000 participants a year. Check out some photos from last year's sale - I can't wait to see you there this year!

Disability Pride Month

Did you know that each color of the Disability Pride Flag represents a different type of disability?

Physical (red)
Cognitive and intellectual (yellow)
🤍 Invisible and undiagnosed (white)
Psychosocial (blue)
Sensory (green)

The colored bands are placed diagonally to convey persons with disabilities “cutting across” societal barriers, while the dark background symbolizes mourning for the community's victims of unfortunately common violence and abuse.

East Coast Contemporary Ballet Performance
The Ted Thomas Dance Foundation and East Coast Contemporary Ballet is proud to present a special dance performance on the Museum Commons on July 21 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, bringing the community together to celebrate the arts and arts education. Admission is free! https://bit.ly/3NZME6b

Town Hall Green Walking Tour
Join a guided tour from the Fairfield Museum and History Center of the Town Hall Green from 10 – 11:30 am on Saturday, July 15 that showcases the people and places of Fairfield along with events that took place right under your feet! Learn about a Native prehistoric village, the 1639 town center, local witch trials, the Revolutionary War battleground, and the Burr Homestead.
