      Rosh Hashanah
Shana Tova to all who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend!

      Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In Connecticut, there are 175-200 children diagnosed with cancer each year, and over 525 children currently in treatment. Unfortunately, here in our own community far too many young people's incredibly bright future was robbed from them by pediatric cancer. There are many excellent organizations supporting children and families with a cancer diagnosis and St. Baldrick's is just one of them. St Baldrick's is specifically focused on researching better treatments and cures for pediatric cancer. You can learn more at https://www.stbaldricks.org/. Go Gold this month in honor and in memory of these young warriors and their families.

      9/11 Memorial Ceremony

On a beautiful evening, last week, I joined the Governor, Lt. Governor and many other state leaders in remembering and honoring the CT residents who lost their lives on 9/11 either in the buildings, planes, or because they ran toward danger to serve. It was powerful to be in the presence of so many family members of those lost on this tragic day and to help preserve and cherish their loved ones’ memories. The state 9/11 memorial at Sherwood Island is beautiful, solemn, and peaceful. If you haven’t been down there to witnesses it, I highly recommend it.

      Racial Imbalance/Redistricting Update

Over the past several weeks, I have had many conversations with the Legislature's Education Committee leadership, the office of the Commissioner of the State Department of Education, our local BOE, the Superintendent, and our state delegation about this issue and how we can help the community and the district.

Part of the challenge is that the legislative timeline is not aligned with the BOE's timeline as laid out in the racial imbalance plan. The Legislature is not in session again until February. If there were to be a change to the law, it could not happen before May, and that is contingent on both a majority of the House and the Senate agreeing to do such and then the Governor being willing to sign it into law. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to this.

I have shared with the BOE and the Superintendent that there seems to be a new willingness to review this law at the state level. I have also shared with them as an option to explore, the state statute that has an enhanced state reimbursement for the construction of a "Diversity School" as was done in West Hartford when they had a racial imbalance. Again, there are no guarantees with the legislative process and our BOE would need to submit an amendment to the racial imbalance plan to the State Board of Education to request more time, and hope that they accept the amendment. The process with the State Board of Education is independent of the legislative process.

Additionally, our BOE stated at this week's meeting, 1. they still have facility utilization challenges to address and 2. they recognized that there is no guarantee that a law change will mean Fairfield does not need to take any action.

As our community continues to participate in this process, I am engaging in these conversations daily and I am deeply committed to helping our district navigate this challenge.

      Recovery and Suicide Prevention Resources
It's National Recovery Month & National Suicide Prevention Month.

Recovery Month is observed each September and the goal is to educate the public that recovery from mental illnesses and substance use disorders is possible. Throughout the month, we highlight evidence-based treatment, recovery supports and individuals in the community who are living full, rewarding lives in recovery. Check out the new campaign from The CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services

The goal of National Suicide Prevention Month is to educate the public that suicide is preventable and it's ok to talk about suicide. We can all learn the warning signs and know how to respond to save a life.

      Children's Healthcare Summit
Last week, I had the pleasure to join the Children’s Healthcare Summit convened by Comptroller Sean Scanlon at Sacred Heart University. It was a phenomenal opportunity to be literally at the table with not only the state leaders in children’s health, insurance coverage, workforce development, and behavioral health, but also voices who lead these conversations across the nation. We talked about breaking down silos, ensuring we are measuring the correct metrics and utilizing that data effectively, rooting indviduals in determining their own priorities, and better braiding and blending funding to meaningfully meet families' needs. There is a lot of important and inspiring work ahead and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

      Paraeducator Healthcare Stipend

Paraeducators are the backbone of Connecticut's education system. I am proud to have helped pass a budget that ensures they get help with health insurance. More than 4,000 paraeducators will receive significant health care assistance stipends from the state if they have a high-deductible health plan.

      Community Mattress Recycling Collection Event
On Saturday, October 14, there will be a town-wide collection and recycling of mattresses at Veterans Park (909 Reef Road).

More than 50,000 mattresses are discarded in the U.S. every day – consigning to the nation’s waste stream an item that actually can be recycled into many new, useful products.

If you have an old mattress or box spring that you’d like to discard in a better, more environmentally friendly way, plan on bringing it to this free event.

Any mattress, no matter when it was purchased, can be brought to the event for no-cost recycling, if it is not damaged, heavily soiled or posing other health or safety risks.
